unfortunately there are hundreds of these sort of companies springing up where people like me decide they'd like to give it a go in their spare time. Problem is most of the ones I have seen go against every design rule and principle in the book whilst touting they are a "proffessional and admired" company. There was one recently who has taken on a large contract (making a large and complicated website with a client who doesn't really know what she wants) whose portfolio is a bit of a joke and the things he is suggesting are incredible. It's hard trying to give independent advice whilst not slandering his company!
Of course the real problem with the creation of hundreds of smaller design houses is the truly decent induviduals who understand exactly what is needed are few and far between and the percentage is getting diluted to even further depths.

My nephew, who's still at school and loves computers, has shown real entrepreneurial flair. In summary, he surfs the net looking for really badly designed and worded web-sites. He then spends a few evenings completely designing a new web-site for the company concerned. When he's happy with it, he gets the email address of the MD and emails him a link to his (redisigned) web-site, saying "it's your for two hundred quid". He can easily do two a week, one of which (on average) he'll sell. So he's earning £10k a year from his bedroom, while also indulging in a hobby which he enjoys. He's a good lad.

This unfortunately is the reality many businesses face after spending thousands of £s by jumping onto the internet bandwagon, only to find no return for their investment.
