Has anyone given their house a name?
I guess it's the home equivalent of a personalised number plates, though it seems a tad more poncey.
[I once thought of calling my home 'Perineum' - a*s-hole to one side of me and my other neighbour was a anyway moving swiftly one... [hoping the forum moderator has a sense of humour]

Depends - if it's a small Victorian mid-terrace then calling it 'Aspley Hall' etc is defo daft. But I don't have a problem with house names in general. Though I did suggest that a particularly laid-back friend of mine call his house Casual Manor

reason i asked (bit sad perhaps) but i recently sent flowers to the parents of a girl, and i was surprised that all the houses in their postcode have a name (they appeared on a drop-down list). and no they don't live in a tiny village either.
i always thought house names were unofficial references given by their owners. i gave serious thought to naming my house 'Wuthering Heights' when i first moved in but then i quickly fell out of love with the place

No some areas have only names but I think they're gradually changing, the village where my Dad lives used to have only names but about 7 - 8 years ago the local council gave all the houses numbers, much to the disgust of many. It is quite a big village though and the reason given by the council was that emergency services can find houses by number but only the postman remembers house names.
Friends had a house in Huddersfiled once that was called 'The Last Resort' entirely due to the fact that it was, mainly after the pubs/clubs had closed.
They actually got the Post Office in on the act and you could send a letter to 'The Last Resort. Huddersfield' and it would get there.

Years ago when i did a paper round (printing had just been invented), I delivered to a house called "Thisldous". Took me ages to work out that the owners weren`t Greek!

My mothers house has two names
The original owner, who had the house built for himself called it 'Beamenze' as by the time he had finished it he was at the end of his money and had to sell it.
The second owner called it 'Minoru' after a horse that won the Derby.
Incidentally, my mother does not use either of them.
Their main home has only recently been given a number and a street name as the village is so small you just addressed everything to:
Name
Village Name
Nr Town
shame it had to change!
