What do I do? I need to ring a BT Landline number but I get a message saying the number is unavailable. Well it worked last week... maybe they've just been cut off?

Anyway, I call 100 to get an operator to try to dial for me, tell me what the problem is etc, and get a menu system. After much pressing of 1s and 2s, the voice says: 'That number is unobtainable'. Yes, I fecking KNOW that... Jeez, what's the point?

Like when there was a powercut once - I rang up the power company to ask when it might be back on, and all I get is a recorded message telling me there's a power cut in my area. Corporate genius at its finest

Oh, dont get me started on that one!

The parent company to that for which I work has a policy of strict mobile phone usage. They will provide a mobile phone for work, but refuse to pay for ANY personal calls (even if its 30 second one to say that you are caught in traffic and running late!!!). Mean to say the least.

Its akin to giving a 5 year old a box of chocolates and saying that he cant eat them, but has in fact got to give them away.... its just not going to happen....

Intelligence of the highest order!

When they're like this with you it means the number you're trying to call has been cut off for not paying the bill. Sometimes if you go on at them in the right way you can get them to eliminate all other possibilities but they'll never straight out say that the other person hasn't paid their bill.

Ah - hmm, thanks Pigeon. I made an appointment for Saturday and now can't contact them to postpone it...

regarding company mobile policy, the main reason for no personal is the fact that if you use it for personal calls it becomes a perk and therefore taxable

IIRC they stopped that a few years back because it was virtually un-police-able (sp?)
