Camping - Recommendations Please

Right, here is the deal. My best friend is going through a bit of a tough time and desperately needs a weekend away. In an effort to do what I could I said I would organise it, saying she could do anything she wanted, I had assumed she would ask for a couple of days at a spa, shopping, european city break etc etc. She wants to go camping, fresh air, long walks etc etc. Second weekend in April, in the grim North of Britain, it is going to be freezing! 
So, I have all the gear (for Pistonfest) but have no idea where to go and would prefer to go somewhere with a recommendation. Firstly, it needs to have clean showers/toilets, at least one pub we can walk to and ideally within 2 hours of Leeds.
Can anyone help....please....

Go up to Wasdale Head in the Lake District and camp at the head of Wast Water. Toilets and showers in the campsite. Pub minutes up the road with roaring fire, good food and ale. You can walk up Great Gable and Scafell Pike if you are feeling adventurous or round Wast Water if less so.

hmmm best to arrive in daylight though. I once aimed for there in about 1979 and on the way the dynamo packed in so had to do the last 5 miles with a torch and sidelights. Ended up smashing tent pegs into the car park at Wasdale head. Only realised this at 7am when one of the campers woke up in a river and some hikers had started parking. IMO the Lake district is crap for camping go somewhere else more pleasant with better facilities. Better still camp in France they know what facilities means there. Swimming pools for example.

erm good question.... The answer is I like cars and I hate the countryside. One lake with a mountain above it looks much like another whereas one bit of grey tarmac with some squiggles may be challengeing and another may be easy. green hills , nah shove em.

Good walks, a huge beach, a great area.
If not, the campsite up Glen Nevis in Fort William is very good.

We camped here in the summer (that week in august when it didn't stop raining). Surprisingly cheap as they don't seem to keen on collecting any money. Great pub at the top of the hill, short walks straight out of the back of the campsite.
If you fancy being adventurous, Angle tarn is striking distance away and would be good for an overnight stay if you can cope with no facilities. Well worth it, watching a thunderstorm blow through the valley whilst being above the clouds is still one of the best moments of my life.

Hmm, fair enough. I'll take the countryside over roads and cities any day. Cars and roads are good, countryside is better.
Another vote here for Wasdale (though I prefer Church Stile at Nether Wasdale to Wasdale Head - and there are TWO pubs outside the campsite! ).
You could also try Fisherground Farm in Eskdale, bit rough and ready but hell, that's what camping's all about!

Mind you the weather can be bizarre: there's a periodic thing where the wind whistles down from Great Gable, picks up three miles of spray from the lake and dumps it in the woods at the far end... spooky...

Why not try the North York's Dales.Gods own county.
When choosing a camp site,avoid ones that take groups of people or school party's etc.Unless you don't value your sleep that is.I tend too find the smaller the site,the quieter & friendlier.They tend too be.

Glenridding in the Lake District is quite nice. The facilities at the campsite are quite basic but there's a nice really pub just a short stagger away, its right on Ullswater, which is beautiful, and also right next to Helvellyn which is a lovely walk.
About 2 hours from Leeds I think.
Would definitely recommend the Lake District. Or how about the Peaks ? There's a reasonable campsite at Edale plus a pub or two and some really good walks. Our primary school used to do a trip there each year (so the walks can't be too hard !).

It's a bit, well, you know, but as a kid I was dragged on camping holidays all over the UK with my parents, and their sites tend to have excellent facilities and are very clean.
