Explain this.......PLEASE!!!

3 guys in a restuarant. Their meal comes to £30 exactly, they each give £10 to the waiter who goes off to the till.

When the waiter gets to the till, he realises the meal actually comes to £25. He also realises the guys don't know this so he decides to pocket £2 for himself, & just give them back a pound each.

(Now I know the maths works out right, I just need an explanation as to why this next bit doesn't make sense!)

So.....each guy has paid £10, he now gets £1 back from the waiter, ergo each guy has paid £9 right? So that makes 3 x £9 = £27, with £2 in the waiter's pocket, that totals £29?!?! So where's that last pound go then?!

They end up paying £27 for the meal, £25 that it should have cost + £2 that the waiter stole.

The £27 cost already includes the £2 that the waiter took, you don't add that on again you add on the £3 change that he gave them to get to £30 once more

But they each gave him a tenner, & each got a pound back, thus each paying £9 which comes to £27?!

My entire department couldn't work this out so I don't feel as embarrassed as I probably should coming on here & asking!!

If you think its barmy on paper, got some real money and count it all in and out on the table from each end of the deal.

You can't calculate it like that and you're confusing the whole thing and the logical premise is wrong.

At the end of the day the three pounds the customers get back plus the two pounds the waiter pockets plus the cost of the meal is £30.

What you're doing is adding the £2 to the £27, when you should be subtracting it for the cost of the meal.

... the £27 they collectively paid includes the tip the waiter took. You don't add it on. That's all!

If he worked for IR they'd tax the waiter on the £3 he gave back, tax the 3 guys on the cost of the meal and the tip, tax the restaurant on the cost of the meal, and then add on VAT - total income to IR = £45.

I know the maths is all sound......meal cost £30, guys each got a pound back, waiter takes his £2 etc...............HOWEVER..........the reason for the question was to get an explanation of why the sums don't seem right in the story HOW I TOLD IT.




this is just gonna get worse for me in my current state...........
