DVLA: new plate, no V5

Just changed cars and have spotted a personalised plate I like. Will be buying it direct from DVLA.

Still clutching the two parts of V5 from new and old cars to send off to DVLA, so I don't have the updated log book for the vehicle yet.

If I buy a plate, do I have to wait for the new V5 to arrive before visiting my local DVLA office and fitting the plates, or can I speed it up somehow?

Been through exactly what you describe.

You have to wait.

No V5 - no transfer.

you have to wait for the paperwork to come from the dvla, as far as i know. it,s very quick though, mine took a week from start to taxing. peter

As confirmed above, you need the new V5. I wouldn't wait for that though before you buy the new'n. Somebody might just snaffle it up!

I learnt a couple of days ago, contary to what I previously believed, if you have the small green section of the V5C (and its not been subject to a previous reg transfer) then YOU CAN have a number transfered onto a newly acquired vehicle.

I have never done this myself, But the info comes from a reliable source

That's very interesting. If true, and I'd known sooner it would have saved me a load of grief!!

Has anybody actually done it with the "tear off", I'd be interested to know.

If you have the new owner bit and the certificate of entitlement for the new reg pop down you local DVLA with it. If you need tax as well take all the forms for that also and you can do it all there and then. They will print out the new tax disc with the new reg and forward the V5 bit to the DVLA for the new v5 in both your name and new reg. They will issue you with a certificate you can pop down to halfrauds with to get the new plates made up, stamp the MOT with the new reg and a bit later you new v5 will turn up from swansea.

Did this a couple of years ago so I assume its still the same.

I have also done a straight reg assignment through the post with the local DVLA office and that was pretty quick also.

Yep, but the thread is about number transfer, not taxing. (I think...but I too have had some beer )

Actually I had to do that last year and got through in a reasonable time and spoke to a bloke who could answer all my Qs, so don't despair.

I was surprised too!

OK the DVLA line is ..

the V5C/2 (green tear off bit) CAN be used to change a numberplate in place of the V5.
