Ex-pat voting

I hear from a relative that the number of years for which ex-pats can continue voting has been drastically reduced - making a lot of them no longer eligible to vote.

And guess what - 99% of them (would have) voted Conservative.

That is simply Gerrymandering-I bet they will try and get all these failed asylum seekers (which they conveniently do not deport) the vote as soon as possible.

Labour is trying to build up a power base of grateful supplicants.

They're still British. Living abroad part of the time doesn't mean they have foreign nationality, so they can't vote in the other country either.

I was not allowed to vote by post in the last election (Having moved just before the electoral role was compiled)

At the last election (when I was technically still due to resume UK residency within the current session of Parliament) I phone the UK consulate in Chicago to ask for the voting forms. I was told that Robin Cook had ordered that ex-pats could not register after a certain time, so a lot of us were excluded.

I'd encourage people to actually look at who is eligable to vote in the UK.

It is FRIGHTENING.

Not only does it include British Citizens, but Eire Citizens and some Commonwealth non Citizens too.

If they want to stop UK citizens abroad from voting then that is unfortunate, but fair enough - it's a democracy, HOWEVER, don't let foreigners vote either.

And for the record, many of us pay into the British National Insurance system even though we live abroad - so don't tag us with being non-contributors. It's not always the case.
