An example of current school discipline
Discussion
In my day the teacher would have defended himself and when the lad was whinging about his newly fattened lip would have been placed trouser band on a coat peg to consider his actions.
Then when he went home to complain about this rough justice would have been beaten again by his parents for being such a little shit.
Of course you cant do that any more in our caring sharing shitty society.

As if those kids give a sh*t about learning.
It's crazy!
I have a very simple solution.
All school kids must achieve a Diploma before they leave school that requires certain requirements to be met, eg educational merit, attendance, behaviour and so forth.
If they dont get the Diploma - then they dont ever qualify for welfare benefits in the future.
At the end of the day - we provide a free education - if they are unable to take advantage of it and end up in the gutter - why does the tax payer need to pay a second time.

Very good idea, maybe you should run for government, I believe with this single policy you would have a good chance

i work in education, (though thankfully I'm not a teacher)(they're genuinely the worst part of my job but i recognize that they have a horrible, horrible time. sometimes.) (though in fairness, they get more holiday than Santa Claus and that should help with the 'stress' i reckon) and i can tell you that of the 853 schools i work with in my region, that the above instance can actually be sighted as an over-zealous punishment by schools. for the most part, his exclusion would have been much less. and sadly, the teachers are not in any position to enforce their embargo for any length of time. the student has a right to his education. and thats as rotten for the teachers as it is for the student who clearly doesn't want to be there.
sad, but true.
equally, and not making any defenses of anybodies actions here, sometimes teachers can be less than helpful in these situations. nobody deserves punching (apart from David Dickinson of course) but sometimes, teachers can be very provocative. I'm not judging, and you simply cant train for all scenarios, but both teachers and students have breaking points, and sometimes 'blame' is useless, especially when just assuming that the student is to blame as he was the one that did the punching. tempers fray, bad things happen. after the event, punishment is pretty damn useless, cos as we can see from the above case, its just extends ill will rather than healing rifts.
again, I'm not judging, Ive just seen enough bad examples from both parties to know that sometimes, just sometimes, things aren't as black and white as they seem.
for example, i know of a great many students who have suffered abuse at home in many different horrible ways, and if they are touched or approached in any capacity, then they will instinctively lash out. and teachers cant know these things, most often until its too late and bad things happen.
for all i know, this kid might be a little bleeder, I'm just saying that occasionally, it might be some other factor that brought the events to pass, at which point blame becomes moot and resolve becomes key.

taking the proposal seriously- it does have some merit
However how would we define 'educational merit'-we would not want to discrinate against not so bright children

In this case the teacher intervened to protect a girl who was being beaten up.
and whatever the background there is no excuse for such behaviour the only solution is firm discipline

I don't understand why the kid was not arrested by the police and put in front of the courts for assault. Seems to me that what he did was far worse than that airgun teacher incident.
There you have an example of Labour policy 'tough on the law abiding, tough on the causes of being law abiding'

Very simple - did they actually "apply themself" during the lessons? If you sat at the back of class and did FA, then you didn't apply yourself, you wont of got the grades.
Teachers know who are trying and who are not.

I can see the teachers point of view as why should they teach someone who has hit another teacher. If it was an adult at a place of work they would have been sacked instantly. Teachers are virtually defenceless in their jobs and their only recourse is their mutual support. The lad screwed up and has to pay the price. Maybe the local learning difficulty establishment can educate him instead seeing as there is a legal requirement to give him an education.

I think the basic idea is a winner, but the devil is in the detail as they say. I would probably have "failed" as I was crap as PE, always got an E and didn't try. There would have to be failsafes to make sure one crap (or vindictive) teacher couldn't ruin your life.
