So Jamie Oliver has persuaded the Government to spend a tiny bit more on school dinners - to be honest I feel it's an insult to my intelligence, just before an election. It's like a thief robbing a man blind and then giving him back 0.000001% of what he's taken and expecting the victim to be grateful. What a farce - the Government's not interested in the kids, they're simply trying to manipulate the week-willed to keep them in power. What gets me iis the "unashamed bare facedness of it".

ed.What I find fascinating is that no-one has seen fit to sack all the way to 5 co-ordinators at 25k Pa. The Local Authorities need a serious culling here. We have had this nuggets n chips culture growing for years and it takes a sodding special needs celebrity chef to sort it (fair play to him). That should mean all the specialist employed to address the chrisis are now surplus to requirements so sack em. Plenty of roads to build.

Just been on telly (ch4 news).
Now the journo's are asking why it's taken 4 government terms to change... and the gov are blaming local authorities, and the loc auths are blaming... etc

Didn't the government announce 'big plans' in 1998, and then do precisely nothing about it?
Good on ya Jamie, well done. Hopefully hes really achieved something, general poor discipline in schools may very well become a thing of the past, especially if they can convince the parents to improve their pantries.

Could be too little too late though. How many parents have started sending their kids in with packed lunches since Jamie exposed the cr*p they were feeding our kids?
We did, and the change in our boy has been remarkable over the last couple of weeks. You are what you eat? Sure as eggs is eggs you are!
From what I can gather demand or school dinners at ou little boy's school plummeted after the first of Jamies programs. Fair play to him, he's done the nation a service.
I do hope the general populace give credit where credit's due ... and very little of that credit goes to a government presided over the decline in standards.

Sad thing is that while I salute JO wholeheartedly and think he has highlighted an important issue, I'm cynical enough to believe that in the long run nothing will change; short term some kids may get better food, but this will then be victim of death by a thousand budget cuts, slowly reducing the amount of money available (probably by just not increasing it in line with inflation), until they can only afford to pay for crap again. Hope I'm wrong though.
What I want to know is why do Scotland already spend more on dinners than this Governments new raised figure?

Something that I've consistently thought about all of this, is the sadness of the situation.
So many people say how great Jamie is for bringing this all to a head, and making the government change. I'm really worried that in future the only way that we're going to be able to change government policy is to get some celebrity to embarrass them.
If it goes that way, we're really in it. How the hell do you get the government to change policy on mundane, but very important issues, when no-one in television cares about them?
