Cant believe what just happened to me. Took a slight detour on the way to B&Q as it was slightly easier. Ended up in the "assisted housing" area of town and one hell of a bunch load of kids were at the side of the road.

Slowed down accordingly to watch one kid about 7 years old kick a ball directly in front of my moving car. Not too bad, but it was in the expressed intention of trying to get another kid to run out into the road....

I watched it all in slow motion as the 7 year old girl tried to get the smaller kid to go after the ball. Other kid did go for it, but fortunately I was slow enough to nearly stop well in advance.....

But why? Why would you play with traffic? Why play in the road? Why kick a ball out to try and get your friend / sibling / neighbour run over? Do they have even the slightest inclination of what this would mean to a driver?

Darwinism at work I hope, but not for the poor unsuspecting driver who could get caught up in this, all because of some idiotic child with no brains.....

Funny thing was I was on the phone (handsfree of course) and gave a running commentary to the person at the other end. They even suggested that this is becoming increasingly common as a "fun" thing to do.... kind of like throwing bricks at moving cars.....

They don't see cars as people driving cars, they just see a metal object with no feelings, hence they can do whatever they want to it.

Besides, they know full well that if you hit them they'll make £'000s.

IIRC the young Douglas Bader used to play chicken with his friends, seeing who could run out in front of moving cars and cut it the finest. They stopped after one of them lost a shoe under the car's front wheel.

The question I'd ask is "where are the parents?" I've got four kids and we know exactly where they are 24 hours a day, and we certainly wouldn't allow our 7 year old out without an adult taking charge.

not much good to them if they are dead though.....and tbh thats what they would probably be if one was ever unfortunate enough to be struck by my car as it isnt a new euro-pedestrian friendly plastiwagon.

i find its not mainly kids, its more the people around 13yrs - mid 20's that just walk out infront of my car without looking, like they are going to just riqochet off the bonnet and land perfectly safely without at-least broken bones or even possibly being crippled....MUPPETS THE LOT OF EM.

Yep, but that's because you're not a chav. The parents are probably drinking beer while watching daytime TV.

Then again, they also know where their kids are...

If you mowed them down the only time the parents would notice is when they had to fetch their own chips, ciggys and then when the benefits got halved...

I say buy a landy, remove number plates repeat route at 70.

That'll learn 'em.

Some years ago i was out and about and had kid bro in the car with me.
As we travelled down this side street, two charver types decided itd be ever-so funny to walk out and do the "stop and stare" in the middle of the road kinda thing.
Me<-----red rag<-----Bull<------.
3rd to second and floor it.
Chavs run for their lives and get to the safety of the kerb with milliseconds to spare.
They still got had by kid bro though.
Cos as we drew level, he coughed up the biggest, mangy-est greeney ive ever seen, and proceeded to gob it out the passenger window and banged it on target onto "chav and Dave's" best new shell bottoms. Jockey Wilson would have been proud.Such aiming prowess to behold.
The look on Chav's face as he realised his lovely clean baggies were covered in some kind of Satan's Glue was a sight to behold indeed. I laughed my tits off about that one for weeks after.

Wasn't it Leonard Cheshire?

(God, the trivia I seem to have squirreled away in my head)

Lois, you are so young and usually positive.

I do worry about the effect of hanging out here with all us Grumpy Old Men might be having on you....

As the vernacular goes I believe you both have achieved "pwn4ge"

I have performed this manouver before. Some drunk charver plays chicken, I block shift from 4th to 2nd and my sedate dieselesque sounding 4 pot suddenly emits a glorious snarling roar as the back end of the '2 digs into the road and the idiot realises that his actions are not having the desired effect. I dont even break 35mph and the road is clear ahead.

Damn, you may be right. Clearly we will have to unite and take over this festering world.
I don't suppose heroes are allowed any more...

I saw some kids doing this sort of game in a new by Indian Reservation/shithole. A bunch of kids walking along the shoulder of a 55mph(realistically 65+), whenever a car would come along on their side of the road they would do this thing, I don't know the word. A sort of jump out into the road, pretending that they were running across. Not even remotely funny, but they were laughing so hard I'm suprised they were standing.

Eventually some poor guy will run one down, and there'll be a huge fuss over it. People writing to the papers, some condemming the kids, most wanting the speed limit lowered and money for sidewalks, etc. Legislation will be passed granting more money to the tribal schools(the kid will of course be killed during school hours), the speed limit will be lowered to 45 or even 35 in the areas around houses, police will be all over waiting to nab anyone who dares speed, and the poor driver will almost certainly be sued. Its happened before...
