I was a bit worried.

Argentina had just invaded the Falkland Islands and I was pretty sure I would be on one of the first wave ships.

I lost several good friends in that conflict, and will be raising a glass to lost comrades tonight.

I'll second that! The Falklands war was a very bloody and hard fought campaign. It could have gone either way, separated only by the professionalism of the British armed forces.

I'll raise a glass of wine myself tonight in memory of those that were killed.

You see all this high tech stuff from Iraq and it is easy to forgrt that only 23 years ago the British Army was attacking enemy positions with bayonets.

It was touch and go.

I work at a place that supplies the RAF

When the ships were hit with exocets the spare parts for the RAF went with them.

Some of the older employees where I work lived at work for the rest of the campaign. They slept on matresses beside their benches and desks to get the spare parts to the front line on time.

Would I do this if it happened again?

They still do.

Saw/heard an interview with an ossifer from one of the Scotish Regiments that was over in the sandpit a while back.

It went something like...

"We were under attack from a group of insurgents hiding amongst a civilian crowd. We couldn't open fire for fear of hitting innocent bystanders but we couldn't let them get away so I gave the order to fix bayonets and charge. We did it the old fashioned way. I don't think they expected that..."

Good on 'em! Don't know about the fuzzywuzzies but I wouldn't fancy being on the reciving end of a baynet charging bunch of p*ssed-off jocks!
