They(American Pilots), however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his SSN on it, in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: "Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?" and "Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?" Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge and handed him the little pile of papers. Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Col. Carrigan was almost number four but he survived, which is the only reason we know about her actions that day.

Muddy waters
There are always muddy waters in these matters as far as exact details; however, her general stance and intent was traitorous. Ironically, just two day ago, she was on the TV and said
"I think back on my actions such as taking photos on top of N. Vietnamese anti-aircraft guns and other things and feel very bad knowing that those things were used as publicity against our soldiers in the field. For Barbarella, the daughter of Henry Fonda to do those things is just wrong".
She is still a turd, but at least she confirms what has always been said about her being traitorous. I think the worst punishment her or any celebrity can suffer is not being sought after by the public, not being a "star" any longer.

Against ther war. The N.V. used like-minded celebrities for propaganda and said celebs were stupid enough to accomodate them thinking that by doing so, they were "making a statement". Oppossing a cause and oppossing the soldiers themselves is very different....she was wrong.
From what I can tell she apologises whenever she is launching something big.
The latest one a couple of days ago is mysteryiously in time with a book launch i think.

The Vietnam war became the defining issue for the generation of left wing students who grew up in the 1960s along with the left wing 'counter-culture'.
I honestly believe that they knew very little about the war itself and the issues involved but were using it as part of their own protest against 'authority'.
The Vietnam war itself was a rather strange war in that America voluntarily fought it on their enemies terms and with one hand tied behind their back.
Given the will they could have ended it within a few months-by conquering North Korea.

If Jane Fonda really did commit these crimes against humanity then she should be flayed daily until she expires. I was not in agreement with the war in Iraq but once the 
wits have sent in our men (note they are men) then they have my 100% support no matter what, they can do no wrong in my eyes. If this woman truly betrayed American servicemen in the Vietnam war then she is the lowest form of life on the planet and no hardship is too cruel a punishment. People like that are lower than Hitler.

As usual Jag, very well stated. The fact that the Kennedy "Boy Wonders" (idealist ivy league youngsters with far maore education than experience)who comprised the President's cabinet caused us to fight the war on the enemy's terms is a hard lesson. We remember that lesson; this is why when we fight, we do so in an overwhelming manner as possible so as to end it quickly. Ending quickly is usually better for both sides than protracted war.

Funny, we're the same age, but I've heard about it (probably because the UK wasn't involved in Viet Nam that you haven't heard about it before). She went over to Viet Nam to protest the war, sat on a gun turret of an enemy tank, etc. The war was unpopular because a) there was a draft rather than all volunteer forces, b) we'd just gotten out of Korea, attempting to curtail the spread of communism. The hatred towards her is that she acted like the Americans who were drafted (and those who were simply doing their jobs having taken the military oath) were over there voluntarily to commit attrocities (and that they were all committing the attrocities). There was no discussion among prostestors about SEATO treaty obligation. And, war crimes committed by Americans are less numerous and horrific than those committed by the Viet Cong or in prison camps. Even in the current war, you hear about improper behavior, and soldiers get tried for it. I'm not sure that the population of our soldiers now is any more noble (or commits less crime) than before. Nobody rails against Kennedy, who put us over there in the first place. Now, I am not a historian, but from what I recall, we (the US) went to Viet Nam because of treaty obligation as members of SEATO (SouthEast Asia Treaty Organization) during the Kennedy administration. There was also Pol Pot and the Kmher Rouge who were rounding up the educated among civilian Vietnamese and Cambodians and killing them off. On a percentage basis, more of them were killed than the percentage of Jews in Europe in WWII. Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson, his vice president, took office to become one of the least popular presidents in American history (surprise, he was worse than Dubya). Johnson and MacNamara (the secretary of defense) proceeded to micromanage the war, so that although no battles were lost by the US (in terms of US vs Viet Cong), the war itself was lost and we had to pull out. They really interfered with the US military leadership. The US didn't get out of Viet Nam until Nixon, (who wasn't such a great pres either). Johnson and Kennedy were both democrats; just to point out that going to war or starting wars is not uniquely republican. The two desert wars (Kuwait and Iraq ) have been compared to Viet Nam because of the guerilla-style fighting, however Viet Nam lasted more than 10 years with around 60K Americans getting killed. I think so far, in this most recent Iraq war, fewer than 2K Americans have been killed, and the war has only been on since 03. The other thing is that an election took place and has been considered legitimate and representative. I think Viet Nam may have also been a former French colony (it's like a second language over there) and France was leaving, and that made a power vacuum for communists to move in. I may have this skewed (as I don't have any history books on me now), so maybe someone else knows better. Anyway, there's a lot of bitterness against former war protestors (among veterens) because so many were sent involuntarily, suffered horrifically in POW camps, and faced a generalized, unjust, presumption of guilt that had been sown by the likes of Fonda. Yes, there were crimes committed. But in Vietnam, there were also civilian and youth combatants participating in guerilla warfare, so things weren't always clear.
