A very interesting article, slightly right wing which is why it appeals to me. Could this work? it follows my thoughts on a Solution to the problems almost to the T.

Can't reproduce the article here for fear of Ted facing the Wrath of the Times Lawyers!

Its three pages long, read it through to the end!

why not send them to the isle of man?

because they'd overcrowd it and there'd be no more room to hold the TT!

...or the risk of the bikes being nicked would be too high for the insurance companies to bear

It’s not big enough.

There wouldn’t be any room for the TT

Hiya' Vixpy1, Forgive me, but it's late, an' I've had a little drinky, so I haven't read the article in full, but I will tomorrow, I promise.

But surely, if poor and uneducated people exist, then the Capitalist system has failed! If it was a success then we would all be living in Utopia. We would all be living the "Hollywood" life and have no money worries.

Go and ask the many poor Americans who are working two or three jobs and STILL have to go and get get free handouts of food from the church charities because they still don't earn enough and the Government they voted for and pay taxes to, will NOT help them. They have a violent society, it's the Capitalist way, us an' them! Not something I believe in. Like Communism, Capitalism must be doing something wrong. Believe me, there is something about the European/British view that is I believe: BEST!!

In Cuba, After Castro's revolution, They had the best educated people in the world until the American embargo took hold. More University graduates/population than any other. Their health system was second to none/ on Diabetic medicine they led the world until the economic war struck......Then the US embargo took hold. Much of their plight now is due to them being isolated from the world by the USA because they had the audacity to take their own Island back from them. And the Yanks say that they stand for Freedom!! Haaa!! I say to you Vixpy1 mate, it ain't so bloody simple. Oh I so wish it was!

That sounds a bit harsh on you mate doesn't it?, Wasn't meant to be, hope you understand where I'm coming from even though I don't expect you to agree.

Eh, isn't Communism *supposed* to work in isolation?

Unable to see it - seems to need registration. Can't be arsed, but I don't doubt that if it proposes having a ghetto of "chavs" and the people that PH members deem to be socially acceptable them I'm sure it will go down a storm on here.

There is a simple reason why capitalism and communism don't work; it's called greed.

At least in the American system you can improve our life if you aren't lazy. I've got $ 34,000.00 in student loans out right now so that I can further my education and change my career, and then I won't be forced to work 2 jobs in order to have a decent life. Could I do this under communism?

NO!

With capitalism it all comes down to keeping up with the Jones'.

Clicked straight through for me without registration etc...

Not sure what the problem was at your end, give it another go?

An article worth reading, it was in the print version over the weekend.

Seems a little narrow minded to suggest that increasing custodial sentencing is our only option.

I dont have any answers but surely we do have other options?

Read the Article

First thing-thank you Vixpy for posting it-it is very interesting.

The basic premise of the article is that social problems, crime etc are not caused by Poverty, Social exclusion etc, but by the collapse of the two parent family.

The rather pessismistic conclusion of the article is that not alot can be done about it.

The Middle classes just need to insulate themselves from the effects by moving to as decent a location as they can and by locking up criminals.

If we moved to an American level of incarceration we would have a prison population of 250,000-that would for the most part be career criminals sent down for alot longer stretches.

It effectively means giving up on the underclass.

I agree with many of his perscriptions-but I don't believe in simple giving up-there is alot we can do if we try.

I've read the article, his summary suggests that his way is the only way.

Which does seem a little self appointed even though he has written a couple of books...

I disagree personally, I dont think prison is a deterrent anymore...

Its not meant to be a deterrant or as a means of reforming the criminal under his proposals-simply a means of locking career criminals up when they are in their peak offending years.
