supermarket petrol

This has probably been on here a million times but here we go.

is there any difference between supermarket petrol and major brand ie shell etc

I use both and cant say I notice any difference, That said I dont have a "performance" car.

dont they have to be at a set british standard?

It's down to the additives package. The real thing has it and the supermarket stuff doesn't. Therefore I run my petrol cars on Optimax and the diesel on BP. Both of which make a noticeable difference.

ARE the additives cleaning agents or alleged performance enhancing ?

I personally dont buy supermarket stuff for the cost but convenience, as probably most people do.

If you go to the Kingsbury Oil depot (N. Warks) you will discover that the 95 octane "brands" all come from one source. The whole site is fed from one pipeline from Milford Haven, and whilst I believe that they add something to the Premium (optimax, Super etc) fuel brands on site, the 95 octane stuff is just piped straight through and onwards to all the different tankers be it Total, Tesco, Shell, Texaco, Sainsburys or whoever..

My Griff gets supermarket unleaded and works well enough for me. If I was planning to cane the nuts off it on a track it might be different, but I'm not and rarely go over 4,000rpm.

I may be wrong, but my understanding was that Shell and BP have their own refineries and distribution networks. All the other forecourts buy their fuel from whoever they can get it from.
