You might have seen that some beggars have dogs with them as they beg, in order to increase sympathy for them and generate more money.

My wife saw such a beggar yesterday and as she was going shopping anyway she bought a tin of dogfood then on her way back gave it too him.

Since he no doubt wanted money for drink/drugs it will be of little use to him but at least the dog will get a meal.

I always thought they could claim something through social for having to feed the emaciated mog?

A bar of soap is another possibility.....

I expect a can of finest Winadog is more nutritious than a Turkey Twistler or whateverthey'recalled....

If the tramp is really hungry, he may get confused and eat the dog.

He may have a mirage and think its a Not Poodle.

JagLover -- do you not feel any sympathy for beggars at all? Just curious.

Did she give him a tin-opener as well? That's just cruel otherwise. Besides, if he really was starving he could eat the dog.

On a slightly related note (but not quite); at present I'm working 7 days a week, the resultant findings of my daily walk to the grindstone consist of seeing many homeless people sitting themselves on pavement begging for my money. For some reason, all these people vanish on Saturdays and Sundays, making the streets seem cleaner with less vomit and noise pollution. So, where do they all go on the days of rest? Their homes?

I think Tonker has just summarised my own position on the matter.

As a matter of interest why should we? Those working pay a fortune in taxes to support those not working.

Why do people need to beg?

Its been estimated that 40% of the homeless are ex-servicemen...

Personally I would rather we looked after the homeless than invaded Iraq.

But thats just me I suspect...

Well, since I pretty much agree with Tonker's position, then it seems I also agree with your position on the matter, Jaglover.

I was asked for the money to get to the night shelter, and at that time the tube used to do the Carnet tickets, so I gave him one of those. Not a happy bear. His exact words were 'what the X*!% am I supoosed to do with that'? I told him.

They did try a system of beggar tokens in some cities which you bought from local shops and which could only be exchanged for B and B at the night shelter. Nice idea. Unfortunately, the tokens became currency in their own right and were quickly devalued, so that a beggar would then need twice as much in beggar tokens to sell for less than face value, to buy a tinnie/fix. It made the problem worse.

Last Easter, a beggar was asking for change outside a petrol station while I was filling the tank up. I had no change on me, so while I was paying for the fuel, I decided in good faith to purchase an Easter Egg for the waiting gentleman sprawling himself across the floor just outside.

At the point at which I delivered his Easter present, I was astonished to find him leap to his feet and proceed to stomp up and down on the once roundish egg, whilst screaming "WHAT THE F**K DO I WANT THAT S**T FOR, GIVE ME MONEY" at which point he received exactly zero pounds sterling.

No im with you there...

And how can you tell which homeless person is there through a set of unfortuante circumstances, and which is there because they're a bum with a drug problem???

Although I dont give money to homeless, i do occasionally give cups of coffee/a burger, especially in winter...

One time I was in London I was just about to hand some loose change to a begger in the tube entrance thingy, then his mobil rang and ignored me while he answered it.

So money went back in my pocket.

She's a cruel woman - did she not give him a tin opener?
