IMHO he's heading in the right direction, but a firmer line will win the Tories more votes. Breach of ASBO = Prison might get the decent, respectable, voting public onto his side...

From what I've seen on the news / street crime uk, most of the ASBO's seem to be given to under 17's anyway.

Well I think this is appauling.. the more legislation that is brought in that makes driving licences fair game for anything other than motoring offences, then the more likely it is to become an acceptable course of action to the lentilists.

Taken to its logical conclusion, will you just get a week or two's driving ban for littering, or perhaps 3 months driving ban for unlawful protest.

Yes, I agree entirely, Howard's statement is not only weak for attracting votes in terms of being seen to be "not enough", but it also has worrying overtones of things to come. My biggest gripe with revoking driving licences is simply that it's largely unenforceable. In 10 years of driving, my licence has only been checked once (SP30) other than having to produce it for hire cars / test drives.

I can see it now, 5 years down the line... the punishment for driving without a licence is... banned from driving for 6 months. Oh, hang on, that's already happening, isn't it?
