Are "Environmentalists" Harmful?

My local council, bless em, are delivering our new wheelie bins... This is the third such abomination I have to accomodate in my garden and they now take up a full two metres of my path 
So we'll now have a normal bin, a recycling bin and a new garden waste bin.
This got me thinking. These new garden waste bins are plastic and Peterborough has about 150,000 inhabitants. That's a lot of non biodegradeable plastic that has to be produced and refined from our increasingly depleted oil reserves.
Not only is there the manufacturing process, but there's the delivery of the bins by diesel lorry to each house. We then have to produce another dustcart with all the attendant use of raw materials to collect the waste and yes, that's another slow moving diesel burner going round every weekday to collect the waste. Will the energy collected from composting the garden waste exceed that expanded in it's collection?
It strikes me that the energy produced from this venture is going to have an incredibly high initial environmental cost, not to mention leave a disposal problem with the bins at the end of their useful life.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think this will actually have a negative impact on the environment if you look at the whole process?

In their current incarnation, environmentalists are a menace. Councils and 'green' recycling are the ecofascist equivalent of the broken window syndrome. Attend to the little details and you avoid confronting the bigger stuff. So here we have government setting recycling targets for local councils with the EU nodding in the background. Does anyone carry out and publish an energy audit? Nope, not here anyway. Doesn't matter see, they just want us to accept the great god 'environment' and bow down.
Don't consider the diesel engined lorries stop-starting along the routes collecting green box contents, belching out the two most carcinogenic chemicals known to science as they go. As long as a few newspapers and tins gat back to the depot everyone's happy. The lung cancers that almost certainly get caused by this activity, together with Prezzer's goddam buses? Hidden in smoking stats so they don't give a toss.
On a wider basis the international green movement - according to one of its former leading lights Dr P Moore the co-founder of Greenpeace now resigned - abandoned science and logic in the eighties when "the extremists and ultra-leftists took over" and now abuses environmental terminology to argue for anti-globalisation, anti-capitalism, anti-mobility and high taxation of industry and individualised transport.
Recycle lentilists as compost and do the planet a favour. It doesn't need saving but we do.

I would love garden waste bins!!! 
We haven't touched our garden in 2 years because to cart away the rubbish is too much of a pain
1) To clean out the car afterwards
2) To lose the parking space (87 cars for 54 spaces in our zone)
3) To f
g queue for 45-60 mins to be directed by a trumped up little hitler how to open up my rubbish sacks and carefully deposit all the messed up refuse in to various skips.

Environmentalism has been perverted by Lentilist control freaks.
There is something to be said for trying to be a little more concious of our environment and putting in the relevant services to support this. Education and awareness is a good thing to do, as this will get some people moving on the subject. There are, however, some people who will do nothing - rightly or wrongly they dont want to bother, dont see the need or simply cant (like they may not own a car for example!). Either way, its a good goal to try and aim for, but forcing people down this route is dangerous, stupid and short sighted....
Especially when it coupled with flawed and idiotic thinking. I posted not so long ago on a thread about idling cars - yet we do nothing about coal fired power stations...... why pick on drivers, home owners and the like. We are hardly the worst offenders!
Oh, sorry forgot - its an easy target to charge more. I do forget that simply being alive is crime in some peoples eyes!

I'm a marked man there now - with my personal numberplate I daren't visit again.
We drip feed our garden waste in to the normal bin now - so
to Reading councilI'd taken shite from this flat-capped pikey every time I'd visited for months, he seemed to have taken a personal dislike to me. I snapped on a particularly bad day and bought him into the real world.
He didn't like it.
Must be the same everywhere.
Back on topic. My son works for Otto, large German firm doing quite well from flogging millions of plastic bins, so it's not all bad news.....

The answer is blindingly obvious, but difficult to enforce.
Reduce the amount of packaging on produce.
Easy, innit? Try telling that to paranoid shoppers who think that a jar of jam should be in a glass jar with sealed lid, wrapped in vacuum plastic, in a box, with a sellophane wrapping - just on the offchance that some idiot decides to inject bleach into it.
