What's Decent Wages?

For instance, at 23 (in a couple of years time) I would expect to be on at least 22k a year.

Is that pretty decent money for a 23 year old?

Or is it a bit pants?

Until I was about 21 I was obsessed with earning more than my age in £1000's per year.

All I know now is that generally speaking expenditure is a static of 4% over income.

I think that will be the case even if I make £100K a month...

Depends what job you would be doing but I would say it was good. I'm 30 and earning nowhere near that

Depends on the profession.

In Accountancy you would be very lucky to earn even that much at that age because you would still be a trainee.

Once you are qualified-at around 25, there is then an opportunity to earn decent money.

Again it all depends on what sector you are in...I was always lead to believe that earning your age x 1000 was a good indicator.

22K at 23 sounds alright to me...a lot more than I was earning when I was 23 (a long time ago).

It all depends on where you live.

I have always aimed for salary = "age in years" x £1000. However, most of my friends/family earn far less than this and I don't feel a great deal richer than them. I guess you simply learn to spend more.

When I was 18 my annual salary was £4225 and by 22 I don't think it was much more.

But then again that 18 years ago....

Depends where you live and socialise.

If you live at home then it's prob Q good. Not national average but not far off (going to check that now)

I was chewing the fat (quite literally) over a couple of burgers at Donnington the other week with one of our esteemed members. He was telling me that basic salary for his decent staff was circa 50k and they only do 4 days a week.

Let me just recap that for you. Manual labour. Basic salary. 4 day week. 50k.

And he said if he didn't pay them that, they'd just go down the road to another firm and get it.

I have a cousin who works for a roofing company as well as doing some of his own jobs and he brings home around 50k a year. I, as a qualified scientist (B.Sc. M.Sc Ph.D.) get around half of that! Then again I'd rather be doing something i find interesting and enjoyable and get paid less than spending my days running around on a roof in the pissing rain...
I have another cousin who also earns more than me as a sales rep flogging camping and caravaning equipment to retailers, good money, but i'd probably top myself after a couple of years!
Remember money isn't the be all and end all of life. I know of several people whose level of self repect stems entirely from the size of their monthly pay packets!
