Paedophiles living next to school

This morning I was stopped by one of the ‘Friends of XXX Primary School’ when dropping off my 9 year old step daughter. I was asked to sign a petition against Planning Permission being granted for the construction of a number of new houses on land that adjoins the school (six in total I think, I was in a rush). The stated reason why they are objecting? Because the houses might be bought be paedophiles.
Now I realise this is a very emotive subject, and I have very strong views on how convicted paedophiles should be dealt with involving rusty shears, etc, but this is a gross over reaction IMO.
Some ‘facts’ for you to consider:-
1. The houses planned are all 5/6 bed luxury homes which will sell for at least £350K+ (I am not suggesting a paedophile couldn’t afford this but…)
2. There are at least another 10 houses in and around the school which overlook it directly and many more which are passed by the kids on their way to and from school every day.
3. The owners of only one, possibly two, of the houses will actually be able to ‘over look’ the school grounds in any way.
4. I know for certain that a number of the ‘Friends of XXX Primary School’ and parents of children at the school own houses which bound onto the land upon which the development is planned.
So over to the PH massive. Would you sign the petition or not?

"Danger to the children attending the school" is the only bit I really saw on the petition. All the rhetoric given by the lady in question, who I also over heard talking to other parents, was about the high interest that such properties would doubtless create for paedophiles 
Their 'sell' was all based on paedophiles, regardless of the full detail of the petition.
It was this that put me off instantly. I didn't even look at the whole thing properly as:-
a) The sell pi$$ed me off - It was almost insinuated that I supported paedophiles by not signing up FFS.
b) I saw the plans a month or so ago and didn't have any trouble with them.
c) In a major rush when stopped.
I'll see if one of them is there again tomorrow and have a better look at the exact wording of the petition.
FWIW there couldn't be any question of objecting one numbers, very 'select', small development, in prime infill and access is onto a main road way away from the school and on the opposite side of the development.

People who want development stopped will try pretty much anything. Objectors to a large development near us requested a signature for a petition. Their main objection was that the development contained 3 storey houses, which they claimed, were not in keeping with the surrounding area. "that's odd" says I, "Don't you live in a three storey house?" If looks could have killed

I was pitching to be the official photographer for the organisers of a family competition. I was told that you're not allowed to take photos of children - because of the paedophiles...
If they get turned on by photos of fully clothed children, the average mail order catalogue should keep them busy...

My elementary school was in a poor neighborhood (lots of vagrants), and bordered on a road with a lot of traffic. It has always had an 18 ft high chain link fence around the front yard. This prevents the casual stranger from just wandering on to the yard and talking to/stealing a kid. It also keeps the little varmints in as it's necessarily too high to climb. This was all about 20 years ago, and it's the same today. Maybe it was once a good neighborhood 50+years ago, and there was no fence needed? But I doubt it.
The petition writer sounds like a moron. You don't know what economic and development situations are going to occur around a school. It's like saying "I want to stem the tide of economics rather than taking reasonable, cost-effective measures." If they are worried about the child's safety, make the school less accessible to people who shouldn't be there.
