Depends what income you're after. If you're looking for, say, 50% of what you earn at the moment or 100% this will dictate what you need to do.
The calculation I tend to use is not how much to save but what investments will give me £Xk per year. I quite like investing in commercial property which can give about 8% return on investment (from rent) plus you've got an asset which is likely to increase in value - which you could sell if you chose to. So a half million pound property would generate, say, £40k per annum. If you've bought wisely and you invest in property in an area where there is an increasing demand, then you could also make a reasonable capital gain if/when you choose sell it. So, you could in, say, five years sell it for £800k, thereby making £300k capital gain and receiving £200k rent totalling £500k in five years, which is £100k pa. The secret is to "buy low, sell high and make sure you've got a tennant".
