Someone seems to have taken a slight dislike to one of the north's local 'safety features' on the A66...

Arsonists who destroyed a £40,000 speed camera at an accident blackspot in Teesside have put lives at risk, police warned today.
The equipment at the A66 Long Newton junction was targeted twice in the past week and is now believed to be irreparable.
Police believe the culprit returned on Tuesday after a failed first attempt on Saturday.
Tyres were placed around the trailer of the speed camera and an accelerant used to feed the flames.
Cleveland Safety Camera Partnership spokesman Mick Bennett said: "In the past nine years, at that junction alone, there have been 41 crashes and 83 people killed or injured," he said.
"The number of crashes has reduced quite considerably since it was put in. But the junction is totally unprotected now and people are less likely to watch their speed and lives are being put at risk.
"This is absolutely mindless damage and if caught, the person responsible could well find themselves in jail."

On the contrary I would say it is exactly the opposite. This was likely done by someone who isn't a mindless vandal at all. Almost certainly a thoroughly hacked off motorist who has been pushed too far by these
cameras.
Mindless Damage is what the police usually fail to take any interest in whatsoever if I recall correctly.

One down, how many to go? For those who don't know the area, this is a 70 mph limit dual-carriage, with T-junctions meeting it, and central reservation gaps for traffic to cross.
Even though the cameras allegedly help keep the traffic to 70, it's the incompetent (and impatient) 2@'s who can't judge speed/ distance, who then pull out into 70 mph traffic, that actually cause the accidents...
Plans have been afoot for some time to build a flyover-style junction but guess what, the residents who cause the accidents complain that it will spoil the view
In the meantime the good old pocket-liner flashes away and granny keeps on putting her Micra in the way of 38-tonners...

The view?
Aahhh those pylons and aeroplanes might be partially obscured for a millisecond.
I've nothing against the area but 'the view' isn't really a valid concern is it.

Not to me! I always laugh at the cackheads who brake just before the scamera, even though they're already only doing 69 mph...

I find a very quick flash of the full beams when they do that causes them to brick it... they don't see where the light came from, just the bright flash
I've thought recently that with all the additions to that road as in stripes across it (in red, IIRC), loads of signs and some weird central reservation layouts, it must be really bloody confusing to someone encountering for the first time, as in, "shit this must be a hazardous piece of tarmac".
When actually it is a decent road, just, like you say, driven on by morons.

I've been crossing that road for over 15 years and I've never, never had a problem negotiating it.
Problem is though I've often seen some drivers (locals usually, go straight across without stopping at all on a prayer. Combine this with someone who sits for a month and you have some poor inncocent fella doing 70 as is his wont, ending up in a box.

The only benefit to them closing the MD junction is that Mr. Plod no longer seems to lurk there. I used to associate with a Trafpol (bikes) who told me it was one of their favourite nick-spots, so I always made a point of slowing down. Well, no need to now
