I think that question the indicator of quite how sad the situation is.
Tony was on tonight saying how sad it is for the families, and that's very important. He missed the real point.
Before, the biggest British was unquestionably MGR. What's left is a rabble of companes that are all fighting their corner for performance or tryring to break into the market, some are bigger than others, some are better than others, but the big fish is dead.

From an economic point of view that is pretty much correct, though wouldn't it be nice to have a car that was wholly British, British design, British funded and British built ?

Ownership is nothing these days. Most of you have pension funds that have shares in Jap and Yank companies. We live in a global village. Parochial xenophobia only exists because of the stupid Daily Mail.
Car manufacturing is very alive and well in Britain. Nissan in Sunderland, Honda, Toyota, Peugeot, Mini, Ford and Vauxhall all have loads of production here. Then there are Rolls Royce, Bentley, Bristol, Aston Martin, Lotus, Morgan, TVR, Marcos, Caterham, Ariel, Noble, Ultima etc etc.
The fact is that we have one of the most diverse and healthiest motor industries in the world. MG Rover was just a disease waiting for the scalpel.

You don't think it pretty sad that here in the UK we can't run a car,and many other types, of company ?
I do find it sad that the last hope for Rover was that the Chinese could bail them, and us as a country, out when they are the ones lacking the know-how to make cars.

It is perhaps a bit sad-but the chances of a British owned mass manufacturer were destroyed a long time ago. Personally rather than sit around moping about the demise of Rover I think we should be celebrating the sucess story which is foreign owned car manufacturing in this country.
