Mr Hammen [chuckling]: remember that time we jumped in the car and drove all the way to Woodstock?
Mrs Hammen [nodding]: oh that was a time. You got hold of that bad acid and didn't come down for two weeks, you told everybody you were Jesus Christ and then jumped off a building thinking you could fly
Mr Hamman : What a bummer
Mrs Hamman : No sh1t

Hmm before this thread I never really thought about why the US governments aren't prick about speeding like those in the UK... I guess the main difference is that in most areas, the police only enforce in areas like school zones and playgrounds, and when they do, they allow quite a bit of fluctuation above the speed limit. They usualy don't touch you within 10mph above the speed limit, which leads most people here to respect them. Though there are the occasional departments, such as the Delaware State Police, who live off of speeding fines like parasites. But, at least they give you the courtesy of pulling you over...
actually, you hardly see speed traps outside of schools/playgrounds.
When you do see cops catching the speeders its usually on the highways or on main roads were people tend to drive way in excess of the limit. At least where I live thats how it is. You rarely see coppers catching speeders as everyone(yes, almost everyone) does about 5-20 above the limit, so they then go after those 30+ above the limit.

I Florida...
If you see anything other than a black with light brown police car, you are ok. Sherrifs and City police leave you alone for the most part (unless you are "street racing" as the local idiots have caused a furor in the press over that).
If it's black and light brown, then it's a State Trooper (Florida Highway Patrol) and you are toast...
...oh and YES, they LOVE to give speeding tickets to tourists. They are actually more lenient on residents because they don't want to have to go to court on thier days off. The tourists don't go to court, you see...
(All inofrmation verified by my neighbor and sometimes beer drinking buddy who is a long standing member of the FHP - who also gets to drive one of those sneaky Corvette-engined Camaros.)

PS: Gazboy - remember the police carry guns too and they are usually better shots. I imagine if the UK allowed "US style" gun laws, then the BiBs would carry as well...

Ernest you forgot that the cops also have Kevlar vests which greatly improves their ability to get a shooter before the shooter gets them.
I think that some of the reason why we sometime get away with speeding is the jurisdictional nature of U.S policing. Let's face it, cops can be lazy just like everyone else so you could speed right by a city or county cop on the interstate and not get pulled over, because even though the interstate is running inside city limits it falls under State Police jurisdiction so your not as likely to get stopped, but if there is a state trooper there and you are 10 over he is going to nail you for sure.
I also had an officer tell me one time that they generally won't even consider pulling you over unless you are 7/8 mph over as it greatly reduces the number of high speed pursuits and officer involved traffic accidents.
O/T- I'm thinking of buying a retired B4C Camaro when I get out of school, should make for a fun toy.

Closer to the thread title, if you saw some dude with a sawn-off in the act of making sure he/she wont get that letter in two weeks time, would you grass him/her up? carry on driving along? whisper 'yes' through gritted teeth and punch the air?
I would offer to hold his gun bag while he aims..
Disclaimer
rovided we are talking about shooting a camera and not a camera operator.

As long as we are talking about the camera I would never tell the police.
