This is one of the worst days of my life so far...Just had a call from my stepdad to inform me that my aunty who has been fighting cancer for the past few months passed away this morning at approx 8:00.
To say that me and my family are gutted is an understatement. I feel guilty that there is an air of relief (she was in desperate pain for the last couple of months), but what are you supposed to feel...
Sorry - easier to type than talk right now...

Popov - my heart goes out to you, mate - really does. may she rest in peace.
Found out on Tuesday for sure that my dad (aged 63) has got secondary lung cancer and has a few months left to live.
I sincerely hope that your auntie got through her last months with minimal pain. You should never feel guilty about wanting her to go - it is never easy to see someone in mental and physical pain. She is obviously in a better place now.
My heartfelt wishes to you, popov. Cancer takes so many of us away, so unfairly.

Very sorry to hear your news, my thoughts are with you. A few years ago I lost my mum (age 49) to cancer and I just want to reassure you that any feelings (especially relief) are completely natural so don't try and fight them. It is not in bad taste to smile and even laugh at this stage, we did on the day Mum died, just remembering all the stuff we loved about her.
The best thing on this day was seeing my younger brother (who was 19 at the time)smile for the first time in a year.
Best wishes
Paul
Death is sadly part of life, nothing can take away the sadness and heartache, but eventually you will learn to live with the fact that your Auntie has passed on. Remembering the good times becomes easier with the passing of time, but of course you will never forget.
I lost my dear little Sister 25 years ago to a brain tumour, she was just 24 years old and had suffered since she was only 16. My Sister told me to have a good life and enjoy it, just before she passed away, I reckon your Auntie would want the same for you.

I understand exactly what you mean (trying very hard to find other words than "I know how you feel" cos I don't)
Everyone reacts differently.
I am lucky so far, I have never lost anyone that was very close to me, when somebody does pass away I have no idea how I will react.
My thoughts are with you and your family.

Thank you everyone for your kind sentiments and thoughts.
Top fuel - I didnt know what I would feel like until today either. I think the worst is to come when I have to see my mum (my aunty being her little sister), and my two younger cousins (who have just lost their mum).
I appreciate the support and compassion from you guys! Its amazing that you can come to one site and people will support/advise/argue with you on pretty much any subject on any given day.
Thanks
Dom
