I had "the stoke" and was RUNNING down a cliff path the other week and my surfboard snagged a bramble. I was running so fast that I was thrown clear of the path and cartwheeled down a section of blackthorn which was rather painful to say the least. I have been picking thorns out of myself for the last 10 days or so. I had 2 in my index finger, one went in under my nail and the other into the pad of my finger. I attempted "pin extraction" to no avail of both. I conclude that the splinter is deep set. It's rather irritating as I am finding it hard to play the piano. There is no sign of the splinter yet the whole end of my finger is bruised and tender, there is little redness or swelling. It has got to the point where I would be prepared to cut it out so it heals up and stops hurting. I figure that my body will dissolve the splinter after a while but it is being bloody slow about it.

Anyone got any ideas? I figure the doctor will say "That appears to be a completely normal finger and if you can't tell me where the pain is exactly, I won't know where to hack/dig it out". Before I cut the whole end of my finger off in desperation......

Sorry, to be not-very-helpful, but combining this with your 'How to get a woman back' thread, I can't help but hear the gentle strains of....

"I've got you under my skin".

IIRC, theres something you can get from the chemist called magnesium sulphate (i could be wrong, if you do get it then for gods sake seek advice). smear it on, and put a plaster over it. it dries the skin and pushes the splinter/thorn out.

however i'm not a medic, so double check with the chemist, or i'm sure someone will be along in a minute.

Magnesium sulphate paste. This will draw the splinter out
Edited to add:

I'm an ex-engineer, I know what I'm talking about with splinters

No the stoke is the sort of enthusiasm which is unquantifiable. It's presence is legendary among surfers. The sort of feeling you got if a police chief said, no-one is allowed on the road today, apart from you, there are no speed limits and here's a Ferrari, it's the yehaaaa!!!!! anticipating something great. Can involve personal injury though. Stoke is what makes surfing better than sex.
