...I am going soon and would like to know what is worth seeing.

I also plan to do a desert 4x4 safari and want to know if any of them let you drive rather than be driven ?

Yes, been there a few times, it's very cool, and a great chill out holiday. The city itself has a number of must sees, like the Gold souk and spice souk, some of the shopping malls are pretty good, and are entirely airconditioned! Going out into the desert is great fun, the package I went on, they drove, but I believe you can get instruction on how to drive in the desert. It was a great evening out, and ends up with a cool barbeque in the desert, under the stars.

The hotels are unsurpassed, last stayed at the Mina-as-salaam, which is out of this world. Highly recommended for a good holiday, particularly if you have kids.
