What career would you pick?
Discussion
I would imagine a lot of people on here started their own business's so this isnt limited in any way. I have just finished uni, and so I have been thinking about what to do next. Lost interest in what I did (Computer science) and am not sure what I am going to next.
What would you do if you could go back and do something else that you really think you would like to have done?

Pimp. The world's oldest profession is recession and technology proof. Staff training is more interesting than in, say, manufacturing.

Management can be tricky, and you tend to have high staff turnover. Competition can also get a little cutthroat at times.
Advantages are that you can put your pink BMW with gold wheels and furry seats through as a company car, and the staff don't tend to ask for a rise.
Despite looking at the media, I must admit I've always fancied being a prestige car dealer - one of the independants you see in the backs of the classic mags. I like the idea of scouring the mags for bargains and selling them on for a bit more with a valet, or being set the challenge of tracking rare stuff down for rich people.
I might not make much money, but the idea of a forecourt full of exotic classics, and the fact that I can jump into any one of them that isn't unsold and enjoy the weekend is, to say the least, very enticing.

In terms of where you can earn the most money (which may be diferent to what you actually enjoy doing) the sectors which I've observed are highly profitable include:
Environmental
Medical
Business Services
Educational Supplies
Many of the above are legislation driven and some are publically financed. As such, I've generally found them to be profitable and when I've sold companies the above seem to be well in demand.
There is another aspect though. The key to a satisfying career is doing stuff you enjoy. I know people who's hobby is their job - they don't earn all that much but they're very happy people.

One day I shall run my own Trout Fly Fishery
..until then my careeer in IT Project Management has proved pretty good really. I see it as more of a means to na end mind you ..once the Morgage is paid off and the piggy banks are looking fat enough to be farmed off for bacon, then I will doubtless take stock of it all and make a change.
Matt.

wish I'd seen the track day boom coming....
I reckon there's more left to run in that field though. I'm thinking rally days. Seriously - track days are expensive because you need, well, a track, and more and more often, expensively-prepped cars.
Rally days on the other hand seem more profitable. Buy a bit of land, carve out a track with a variety of surfaces, then scour the small ads for some cheap old hot hatches. Stripping out the interior (and selling the trim) won't cost anything, then you just fit a roll cage, strip off the lights and exterior trim, get hold of some helmets and fire extinguishers and off you go.

What are you looking to get out of your career Chris?

I have thought about the viability of doing an off-road 4x4 buggy type thing in our field.....just not sure it would pay well enough tho'
Well I've always been interested in rally prepping (mainly as a cheap personal track day car but I can see the business opportunity). I think your field would have to be pretty big, a few features (trees, ups and downs), and not so muddy that you can't put a bit of gravel and tarmac in it. Then plan a couple of routes that could be coned off, and put some hairpins in for handbrake purposes.
4x4 buggies are cheap and low-maintainance, but I have a feeling you'd make more money with a hint of rallying about it - it's more glamourous, and if you think about it - what's cheaper; some specially-built buggies you'd have to either make yourself or scour kit car mags for, or boggo hot hatches with tired interiors that could be quite easily turned into rally circuit heroes.
You build either mate, I'd go along.
