Because contrary to media hype, you can exercise REASONABLE force against an intruder, in order to defend your home or your person.... It's just that reasonable force, doesn't mean shooting them in the back with a shotgun, whilst they are running away.

How about planting my elbow in his face, collapsing his windpipe, snapping an arm and possibly one or both legs so he can't get up again?
To me, this is reasonable. I don't know why he's there. He could have a knife or anything? What's to say he's a burglar? He could have the intention to kill?

From what I understand, if you honestly think that your life is in danger (I'm sure I saw a knife in his hand officer.

In the US (well at least in Florida), it is cut and dry. If there is an intruder in your house you can reasonably send him to the celestial dirt nap. After doing so the police will arrive, make sure that it was actually an intruder and then, quite helpfully, arrange for the removal of the detritus.

Advice from a previous Baton Rouge, Louisiana District Attorney: "If you shoot an intruder before he gets inside, drag him in and then call the police; cleaner case". That seems extreme to me; I am for sneaking around and blasting him from behind and letting him fall inside.
