Ok can any runners here tell me what would be a good/acceptable time for running 3 miles over tarmac and off road terrain (not rough though)?

15 mins would be pretty good. All depends how good you are and how old.

bloody hell!
15 minutes would be more than pretty good.
18-20 minutes should be a more do-able time.

I'd use a longer fuse and go for 25, time for a fag in the middle.

Id give myself a few hours, you might find a pub along the way.

Before being kidnapped by the beer monster I could run 5 miles of hilly tarmac/farm tracks in about 35 mins. Now it'd be closer to 45 mins

20mins for 3 miles is a respectable time. You sohuld be able to push youself over this relatively short distance.

I'll second that. 7-7.5 minute miling is respectable (so 21-22.5 mins for 3 miles), and will give you around the 45 min mark for a 10k run, which is generally regarded as fairly reasonable.

Low sixes over 1-3 miles is fairly easy if your in decent condition.

Long distance really wasn't my thing when I was at school, I haven't ran since leaving as for reasons Milner stated. When I was in my last year at school I was running the 400m in 52 to 53 seconds, but also could keep up 5 minute miles for a while. Alas that was a helluva long time ago and a lot of abuse has passed my lips since. I sometimes think about taking it up again but I really don't think my hips and knees would take it after a lifetime of roofing.

I'm just not suited to running at all. I would be suited to sprints (I used to do 100 and 200 metres at school), but them I started putting on muscle and getting bulkier and heavier, but my energy still comes in big, short bursts over a long time, so cycling, especially mountain biking, is my sport of choice, as use of the gears accommodates this. I honestly think a marathon, no matter how much training I put into it, would be the death of me.

Same again here, althought it was knees and ankles first. Was the best long distance runner in every school I went to, had equipment sponsors for other sports etc, but in my joints couldnt hack it. Took up weights and got a 6pac, then the beer monster struck, and once you stare down the dark can, forever will you consume its density. After advice from obi-wan-threshers, Ive decided to persue 4-pacs instead
