Overseas -Tax free?
Discussion
Hi all,
looking for advice on possibly getting my tax back for working out of country.
I work 9 months a year in the Middle East for a UK company, but my family resides in the UK and i also get paid in the UK; Unlikely my company will change that.
I believe being out the country for this length of time qualifies for non payment of tax, but are there other factors taken into consideration by the tax man, such as owning property that my family will still be living at in the UK?
Also, Will the tax man hound me for the rest of my natural life?
Any feedback appreciated, as i'm only just looking into this.

Interesting post Bindit. The world is changing, becoming "Global". Driven by the "Right".
Therefore, there will be "rich" and "poor", ....."Little islands of wealth (globally)amongst a vast global poor", indeed, the process has already begun. Soon you will need electric fences, the lot if you're rich. Oh! but of course you have already got them! Haven't you?
The Low tax, Low Paid, educated but skilled ecomonmy that you dream of, that will become the new tiger eccommy of the west right? MMmmh! Nah! It aint gonna happen, no thanks! Let the whole lot collaspse!!! I'd work for myself first!

only asked a simple question..
This is a very complex area and you really need professional advice. However...
From www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/faqs_general.htm#3 -
So working 9 months abroad would seem to qualify you to become non-tax resident. There are loads of specialists that deal in situations like this (surprised your company hasn't put you in touch with one to be honest) and they will be much better placed to advise on your particular situation.

Q.1 In what circumstances would I become non-UK resident if I left the UK?
A. Normally if you leave the UK permanently or for 3 years or more or to work abroad full-time, you will become not resident and not ordinarily resident in the UK if
* your absence from the UK covers a complete tax year (i.e. 6 April to
5 April), and
* you spend less than 183 days in the UK during the tax year, and
* your visits to the UK do not average 91 days or more a tax year over a maximum of 4 years.
(For visits to the UK, days of arrival and departure are not normally counted as days spent in the UK.)

So, does this mean he can get his tax back or not?
