Good good.

(running between 3/4 and full here, rather than 1/4 and empty as normal)

Problem is, it ain't the refiners. Or the production companies. These guys have no choice but to pass on the higher price of crude to the customer, or go out of business. So beating them up does no good and could do harm - Remembering the bad old days of fifty-cent gas prices in the '70s in the states, the price was OK but the supply was short. Actually the high prices are driving exploration and more production, all that Adam Smith invisible hand stuff. Sounds like BS but it does work. Today here in the States regular is $2.43 or more per (US) gallon, but for that price I can have all the gas I'm willing to pay for.

The government COULD cut taxes on fuel, it would make more sense to protest there.

The crude oil price issue is, I think, driven in large part by China and India coming on line as consumers, and less new petroleum being found.

In South Africa they make syncrude from coal, this is another idea that can actually improve the situation.

WTF is wrong with these people?

The oil companies are not responsible for the high tax on fuel.

The petrol station is not responsible for the high tax on fuel.

The public are not responsible for the high tax on fuel.

The government is responsible.

So what do these people do? they target and attack and inconvenience those who are NOT responsible, whilst the government remains unnaffected.

If anyone restricts my liberty to buy fuel, or restricts my movement on the road or inconveniences me in any way or form, when I am exactly the person whos' support they should be encouraging, they can go to hell.

Why dont they blockade government offices and government fuel supplies, take the battle to those who are responsible, and dont make life difficult for innocent people just going about their normal business. The last one was a ball ache.

Though I did hear today that BP's profits are up by 25% for Q1. Cynically, I'd wonder how they pulled that from the hat.

Of course, I'm too lazy to go looking to find out...

BP claim a lot of their profits are due to high oil prices.

Mind you, how do you get a government to listen? My stopping people from filling up you create a national crisis which draws some attention to your cause. A petition to 10 downing street is just used as emergency bog roll...

In WWII the allied forces used 2 Billion (Probably 10^9) gallons of MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) in their avgas, this had to be made synthetically and that's a lot of flasks full. Coal distillation does yield some good stuff but also a large amount of crap. There is then plastic pyrolysis which yields a flammable oil, I think it is more suited to diesel. The getting fuel from solids is generally a bit inefficient and messy. But they could sort it out.

I have been having a think. Veg oil=Bio Diesel

Diesel->Petrol via catalytic cracking and reforming is plausible.
similar process
Bio Diesel----------------->Bio Petrol must be feasible?

I will always run petrol cars as even the best TDI bells and whistles are still crap.

Alcohol from veg?

Methane from decomposition?

Hydrogen from seawater?

None as good as 4* but OK in a pinch.

This is a bit dry and long but here it is. This technique is more applicable to the US with our large coal reserves and not so much to the UK with your North Sea oilfields.

As far as I know, in South Africa they make very acceptable motor gasoline from coal. And at a cost comparable with $35/bbl oil.

I think a lot of the stuff that HAS been made over time was not too good, but this is because it was done by people who were in the process of losing a war and it's hard to do first class work with bombs raining down on your head.

I didn't know about the MTBE in WWII avgas.

To some extent I agree with you. But the real reason for a protest of this nature is that it stirs up the media. A protest outside a government building will get a news story one night. There being no petrol in the pumps inconveniencing Londoners will get continual coverage.

Last time I hadn't even heard about it until London ran dry.

That's how hard it is to get the media to run a story contrary to their worldview.

Plus their gang is bigger than your gang and if you blockade a government office you'd find lots of men in blue suits with shields and sticks asking you nicely to move on. No doubt all dressed up under an anti terrorism law.

That'll happen anyway if it looks to be turning into anything serious.

Except I think they'll probably be wearing green and turn up in tanks.

They need to blockade all the diesel tankers now. Stop all diesel getting through now.

Then all the socialists won't be able to catch their buses to the polling stations next Thursday and we can GET RID OF THIS LOUSY Fg GOVERNMENT

Problem is if you got an altnerative Government say Tories then Fuel tax would still rise as it is an easy way of raising money.

where were the Fuel Protesters when the Tories started putting up duty on fuel back in the 1980's

Imagine the Lib Dems winning they have promised and extra 50 pence per litre in tax and as for the Greens.

I don't really care about the fuel. I just want to get rid of the government.
