Acceptable to charge £100?

Quick yay or nay question.
At Uni we have to get our dissertation bound using the school's covers hence we have to use the Uni printing service. Three days in advance of when you want to collect it's £6, two days £10, same day £100 (all assuming you've printed the >100 pages at 6p/page prior).
A friend thinks thats perfectly acceptable as it's a deterent (understandable they need a deterent as everyone would take it on the last day and they'd be swamped), but since it's a monopoly I cannot believe they get away with charging £100 to those who are getting it printed (as for them leaving it to the last minute, well thats daft anyway).

I think you've answered your own question here.
Sounds perfectly fair to me.
Can see why they've done it but sounds ridiculous. They're charging too much even at £6. I got a large document bound including 2 clear plastic covers (which they rip you off for) for less than £3. I would ask for a copy of their cover sheets. If they won't give you one scan it in or search the net for a copy of theirs. Our uni wouldn't give me their template for cover sheets so I searched their site for the originals. Didn't find the current ones but found ones from 1997! Have been using them for a year so far and no complaints as yet!

(not print, you have to do that seperatly - this involves taking the paper you supply, putting a sheet on the front and back and punching some holes in). I do understand a deterent should be done, but £100? That is disgraceful! It's almost as if they know fine well people will do it so they try to make as much as they reasonably can out of it.
Personally if I could get the cover sheets I'd get mine bound elsewhere, but since it's a Uni project it has to be done in Uni to get them more money!

If they are prepared to do it for £6 (which they are obviously still making a reasonable profit on) then you would think a more appropriate deterrent would be maybe £15 - £20 at absolute max...

The bottom line is they are being very upfront about it. This is a deterrent, probably to prevent a nightmare of trying to bind hundreds of dissertations on the last day.
You have plenty of warning - do it ahead of time!

Thats not strictly true, we only found out because someone specifically asked - if you turned up on the day thats when you'd find out as it's down as £10 if you take it quicker than 3 days. Personally mine will be with them on Monday / Tuesday at the latest, but I can't help but feel they are taking the urine out of Students - it's not as if we get that much help from anyone as it is

That's ridiculous! Our dissertations cost about £30 maximum to bind, and that's for a 10,000-word monster with bibliography, abstract, introduction and covers thrown in too. All double-line spaced.
Mines 20k minimum with all the gubbins you have with a full code listing as well (theres around 3000 lines of code in my program which need to be printed and formatted
. For example, 1300 lines = around 30 pages, although admitadly we are allowed to double page and small font.
And I might add that our 10k dissertation is only half of the coursework this term - there are two other 5000-word essays to be submitted too, totalling 20,000 words.
Lets just say that there are plenty of courses I know of that I'd rather be doing right now

pah. This year has seen me doing:
* 20k dissertation with a 3k loc program developed from scratch to simulate a cars acceleration.
* 10k interim report on the above
* writing a game from scratch (the entire engine, scripts the works.)
* writing a 2k word essay on public key infrastructures
* cracking passwords which took up so many days computation
* writing simulations of network performance, testing and writing up.
* doing a code review and writing a report on our success.
* developing a 3D engine from scratch which could show a given set of polygons from three different view points whilst been able to fiddle with the structure of the scene.
* Write an essay on interfaces, 3k.
* Write a webserver which could parse files and send the correct responses for all manor of different requests.
* learn a new language in 2 / 3 days and write a website which could read / write to db's in said language.
* prepare cash flow statements, accounts, ratios etc since I take an accounting module.
I'd almost prefer 20k essays

Same here.
Where I went, you either paid for the uni to do it or they'd happily supply the appropriate covers for you to get it done yourself. Everybody's happy.

Some courses are a joke, but thats not the point of the thread
Quality, not quantity dear boy.
I'd be careful calling physchology a joke… they'll run rings round you, screw with your head and then laugh at you…
