maybee a crazy idea, but i've an interest in improving my german language skills. Thinking about it, reading a german car forum may help, because i'm interested in the subject matter.

)Start with some of those 1970's 'Commando' comic books.
As a military man you need to begin with useful phrases like "Hande hoch Fritz" , "Gott in himmel", " Donner und Blitzen" and " Achtung Englander!"
Once you've mastered those, then you need to progress and read 'Adolf Hitler: My part in his downfall' 'Rommel? Gunner who?' and 'Monty: His part in my victory' by Spike Milligan.
These contain lots of German and as a bonus are hilariously funny.
Then when you've done all that, dig out the tape of that German bint driving Clarkson round the Nurburgring and take a long hard look at her and ask yourself,
" Could I?"
You may, like many PHers, then decide that German's not really for you

I've read PH for some years and could improve my English skills. In conclusion, I do highly recommend using t'internet for getting experience with foreign languages.
I don't longer contribute to German language forums, so I don't know good communities for you.

That's about as far as my German went too. 'Schpitfuer' came up quite a bit too - just before one belched death into the belly of the fleeing Hun and sent him spinning earthward in a sheet of flame...
Trouble was, by the time I grew up, they'd all gone...
What a language though. Whatever you say in German, it still sounds like you're about to invade Poland
