Thinking of joining one slightly closer to home.

But then I thought, would it be cheaper and almost as effective to just buy some basic stuff and work out at home?

What ya reckon?

Cardio stuff (cycling, running) is ultimately more enjoyable in "real life". But the chance of actually doing any of that is quite small. The only reason I went to the gym was because once you're there, you may as well work out rather than when at home the temptation to go and watch TV is quite large.

Depends how much your gym charges, how often you go and how much space you have at home...

Gyming at home never works in my opinion.
You have to be very motivated to work out at home.
I prefer going to the gym.
I do run occasionally from my house.
But gym first thing in the morning.

How dedicated are you feeling? My gym subs make me go regularly. I don't know if I would do the same if the equipment was sitting in the garage.

No, def go to an actual gym - more motivating, more enjoyable etc. Never really works at home and the stuff most people buy is never even half as good as what you will get in a gym.

I'm feeling pretty dedicated, although I admit there's a chance it may wear off...

Possibly coule turn into a bit of an excuse for a cop out I suppose.

I was just thinking of money saving ideas!

Another thing is, what time do you guys find is the quietest time of day? I went down just after one today and it was so bloody busy! Not used to that!

If your local gym is a Fitness First then make sure you take a tour before signing up. My one rarely gets cleaned and the changing room floor is about an inch deep in dust, talcum powder and used plasters. i.e. a right $h1thole!

We could organise a regular Surrey PH gym session...

Although it might look a bit fruity.

May not help you much but I go to a university gym (nottingham), its cheap, well equipped and empty at the weekends and during the holidays. Also, the students are generally more pleasing on the eye than the usual gym clientel . I'm a member of staff so get a discount, but the public are welcome and its still cheaper than a comercial gym.

I would forget about working out at home, guaranteed cop-out territory in my experience. Running, cycling etc. are all much more fun outdoors but you need a partner or a club otherwise you right back into 'do it tomorrow' mode.

Agreed. They just dont work well at home. If you do get into weights in a big way, and want some for home in years to come when you've proved your dedication, do so.

[brag mode]In his early 20's, my dad worked with weights and achieved a lot, was on the cover of national news papers etc. He did a lot of work from home to save money, and was incredibly disciplined. I, on the other hand find doing the dishes daily a mega challenge, which is why I dont - my girlfriend does them for me [/brag mode]

Gyms are social, go, enjoy and buy eqipment when you've prooved your commitment is my advice

While there's a wee collection of waistline-conscious Surreyites here, does anyone fancy the particularly limp looking possible pintage idea tonight? It's in the Surrey section...
