what's Guilford like ?
Discussion
You mean Guildford ?
Pleasant Surrey town - some good bars and nightclubs - bit chavvy in the middle on a saturday night but where isn't these days ?>
but the surrounding villages are very good.
i live down the road but have worked in guildford for a while.
look at Godalming as well - smaller than guildford, less congested - good train links etc
Personally I think it's a great place - very pretty, lovely countryside you can walk to from the town centre, good bars and restaurants, nice people.
As with anywhere, there are areas to avoid - namely Park Barn and Bellfields (and some parts of Merrow). However there are plenty of nice areas and, while it's a pricey area, you get more for your money than in London. If you're looking round or having a night out, bear in mind that the bottom of town (round the one-way system) is where the chavs hang out. However, as they can't be bothered making their way up the hill, you don't have to go far to find nice places and people.
Oh, and loads of PHers seem to live here
If you're more specific, we could probably recommend areas.

Yes. Guildford is most pleasant. Less than 30 mins to Waterloo and 15 mins to J4 of the M3. Good clothes shops and eateries and not too many oiks. Agreed, bottom end of town is more chavvy and caters for the younger/student population - which is quite big being a university town.
Makes me chuckle - yes Park Barn and to a lesser extent Bellfields are not the most salubrious areas but its all relative. When you've worked in the big inner city estates in Southampton, believe me Park Barn is up market.

I spent 3 years there as a Student.
Really nice town centre, goos place to shop and eat out etc.
I lived in Park Barn for a year. No trouble walking home at odd hours but I did keep my head down!
Houses are not cheap. I guess you have got to be looking at 250-300K for a nice 3 bed.
70s night on Monday at the club at the top of town!!!
The only few negatives would be
1. Try not to live in between the town centre and uni - Drink students at all hours
2. I think some houses at the back of the Uni got a bit upset at the very loud music from the Union on a Friday night until 2am. Watch out.
