For this probably eternally socalist country has these fools running for parly; The scottish socalist party

the SSP said:
The SSP is contesting 58 out of 59 seats in Scotland with a detailed, radical, 20,000 word manifesto that includes calls for an independent Scottish republic, re-nationalisation of the rail industry and an £8 an hour minimum wage

What the hell is Scotland's problem? I just don't get it.

And £8 an hour? I'm sure every Jock Blue Collar will be all in favour, but given that cheap labour is the very reason many companies locate in Scotland, it may be a little unwise.

Scotland is a funny old place, it has produced some of the greatest thinkers behind the Liberal economic system but remains so socialist.

I sure as hell wouldn't vote for the SSP!!!!! If they ever got their way this place would be a disaster zone. The scottish parliament is bad enough, but if the SSP ran the show, there would be only two options: Leave quickly, or guerrilla warfare

The SSP also want to introduce an 80% top rate of tax.

They can right off.

It maddening. I was quite impressed with my soon to be 80 year old grampa who worked as a brickie from 14 to 70 (and served in the war of course). He held his hands up and admitted that Thatcher had been an overall longterm force for good in Scotland. This is unusual; the vast majority of older people about here romanticise about working down pits and most of the youth are so ill-educated they cant process the thought of actually working. Mostsimply cant see the benifts closing old industry has given.

trust me - we're not all socialists! it's just that a great deal of people who used to work in factories/shipyards etc seem to have picked up on some of the socialist ideas.

the SSP are something of a joke, but I do believe that if they created a branch in, say a run down area of birmingham (example only) they would also gain some backing.

they want minimum wage as £8 an hour - should that ever happen then we will all end up paying £4 for a loaf of bread.

they want to empty ALL the prisons and make them into asylums for the insane (or SSP members??) ban nuclear power, ban coal power, ban windturbines.

only the true minks vote for them

Y'know, I'm not going to attack any of you personally on this even although this subject is one of the few things now that can still get steam coming out of my ears.
What I am going to do is suggest that all of you on this post, and especially the Scots, seriously need to study modern Scottish history, particularly as it relates to industry and the English parliamentary decisions that were "implemented" on the Scottish people.
Margaret Thatcher was good for the long term of Scotland? Utter, utter fantasy!!
The decimation of the traditional industries was good for Scotland? My God! I'm speechless!!
Scotland built the most magnificent ships ever made, a great many that are still in service all over the world, and locomotives, and at one time cars, and giant cranes and power stations, etc, etc.
We were told that the shipbuilding era was gone.
The Germans, French and Japanese can't keep up with the orders for ships.
Thatcher personally ensured that Ravenscraig was closed utterly devastating a whole community, an area now with one of the largest drug related crime figures in Britain; this was good for us???
She did this when the mill was totally self sufficient and in considerable sustained profit with orders from all the European car manufacturers: and she did it to ensure that steel production stayed in England.
The most commercially successful country in the EU is usually recognised as Germany: they are Socialists, do you understand that?
If it would not have been for Tommy Sheridan, and I don't mean his party or an organisation backing him up, because he wasn't even an MP at the time, I mean him personally, the Poll Tax would have been implemented throughout the whole country, and all of you would have been on the receiving end of it.
What you personally think of him or his upbringing in a rough area is of no consequence to his ability to carry through what he has promised to do for his constituents; he has gone to jail on three occasions for his beliefs; would you do that?
Do any of you know that he only draws half of his salary, the other half gets paid into a charity; would you do that?
Since the English parliament privatised the railways, we have had nothing but utter chaos and monstrous price increases, the worst rail network in Europe.
What a tragically sad indictment, because it has cost lives in the form of rail disasters whilst the corporate parasites walk away with their dividends.
The railways in most other EU countries are heavily subsidised because it's the only way it works properly.
If you haven't done so let me suggest you take the Mistral from Paris to Carccassone, you will then know what a real railway is like.
I bet not one of you on here would work for eight pounds an hour, but you clearly think it's acceptable for others to do so.
Scotland will never be able to truly grow in Europe until it has it's own independent parliament; not the sham that operates now, which is just a clone of Westminster, but a parliament of and for the Scottish people exclusively.
So what really is it in principle that is wrong with these aspects of the SSPs manifesto?
The answer of course is nothing!

I'm happy to let them go independent. The Irish can have Ireland and the Welsh can have Wales. In business terms I believe it's called 'consolidating'.

As all three areas are heavily Labour and therefore no doubt a drain on UK resources, I'm sure England would be better off without them. Oh yes, and you get Gordon Brown back too.

That's devolution sorted out. Next...

Except that the English do benefit in a not so small way from the North Sea oil fields.

Fair point.

Do you remember the euphoria when oil was discovered? Hooray, we have our own oil - cheap petrol for ever! Not dependent on OPEC any more... Hmm.

OK, my plan is to return Scotland to the Scottish, but keep the oil. As JP Getty said, 'the meek shall inherit the Earth - but not the mineral rights'

I want you to try and imagine oil being discovered in the Bristol Channel or the Wash and development continues 'til the first tanker load is ready to come ashore and the First Minister of Scotland stands up and demands that it is brought up to Grangemouth for processing; what do you think Thatcher would have said?
What do you think the whole English nation would have said if the Scots would have started the nonsense of saying , "Oh no, it's BRITISH oil, it was found in British waters!"
The first tankerload of crude to come out of the North Sea in Scottish waters off the coast of Scotland, not any other country, was shipped directly to the Thames, in an overtly political gesture, if not designed to put the Scots firmly in their place, then at least to remind them that it was the London Parliament that dictated, and I use that term literally, policy for Scotland.
We now have probably the highest fuel duty and the highest fuel prices in the world; an exclusivity amongst oil producing nations that to me, is acutely embarassing. A true sign of the corrosive apathy spreading like a cancer in this country, and the gross misrepresentation of the people's will by a purportedly democratic government.
And you can't blame the Socialists for that, virtually all of that era was dominated by Tory government.
Would you really be willing to believe that the Scots could have mismanaged the oil industry as badly as that? I mean could it be any worse??
What we need back in the country are true philosophical leaders with the courage to drag us out of the now deeply insidious class system that still pervades all of our cultures, industries and commerce.
We have to stop thinking left and right wing, Tory and Labour, chav and yuppie.
Whether we like it or not, we're all in the same boat, but until we start to work collectively to share our wealth and distribute the benefits of this we will continue to sink into the mire.

But we would loose the socialist voters of Scotland-without them we have the chance of a Conservative government in England-the economic benefit of which would be huge

Erm No the German economy is suffering from voting greens into power. Traditionally the Germans are easily led they have a history of it. Socialism is a branch of politics and it works fine. Stupid loony left wing green environmentalist shielded shite is the biggest threat to humanity in the 21st century.
