Someone told us today, a bloke was gardening and got a thorn stuck in his finger. The thorn had been pissed upon by a rat. He got septecemia, almost died, went blind in one eye and for some reason (some kind of virus in his brain) could become very ill at any moment during the remainder of his life and drop dead.

Thats the story as it was told - we have a few gerbils. Anyone know if its normal rodent bacteria that can harm humans if fluids enter a wound, or is this definitely a case of a diseased rat (rather than a tame clean one) which caused the damage?

There is always a risk of infection from foreign material getting into an open wound. I think your pretty safe from your gerbil, although its always advisable to wash your hands after contact with the animal, or after cleaning its cage. Rat piss is a little more dangerous as its possible to contract Weils disease which is something you realy don't want to get www.btinternet.com/~ringwood.canoe/Weils.htm

Cheers for the link Milner. I cut my hand on a pistol in a mexican restaurant recently whilst palm-shooting. The following day one of the gerbils dug his claws into the gaping flap of skin. Not too painful, but if I find myself on my deathbed next week, I'll have reasonable evidence to suggest that somewhere in Squeaks family tree, a rat raped a gerbil.

It seems the disease is carried by rats only, not gerbils.

We've had 3 rats and they piss all over you apparently they don't have a bladder. But you learn to like it.
Kind of peverted thinking about it bit like a golden shower but more like rain.

A waiter at a mexican restaurant let me borrow his gun, I fired it by palming the hammer (rapid style, like in the movies, ringing any bells ) - in the process I sliced my hand open. Gerbil clawed fleshwound the next day. Gerbils dont carry Weils. Only rats do. If I die, gerbil must have been half rat. Hence was raped

Are we clear now?
