Have you seen some of the albums coming out this year? For me personally it's looking like the best year i can remember, with releases from almost every artist I ever liked.
Over the next few weeks alone there will be new albums from Nine Inch Nails, Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Robert Plant (Led Zepplin), Ryan Adams, Audioslave, Foo Fighters, Limp Bizbit and Coldplay. All releasing long-awaiting albums which will be important for their careers.
We've already had some great releases, such as albums from Beck and Bruce Springsteen, and later in the year there will be new LPs from ledgends such as Oasis, Velvet Revolver, White Stripes and the Rolling Stones.
I've just spent close to £100 pre-ordering that lot online. I'm going to have to upgrade from a 4GB iPod

Coldplay went straight into the Billboard Top 10 in the Number 8 position with the new album.
No UK act has done that since the Beatles...
2004 was a great year for rock and with dance music dying a death (good, the proles didnt know what to do with it anyway) I can see 2005 firmly building on that.
Glasto is definately rock biased this year.

I have Coldplays album on pre-order, bought The Killers album which is great, looking forward to something new from the Foo Fighters too, have the new Queens of the Stone Age album which is pretty cool, New Stereophonics album is ok, and am going to see Audioslave at Brixton on 20th June (??? Must check what date)
My only slight purchase mishap so far has been The Doves album which is dull as dishwater... shame!

Highly recommended its a great album. Just got to steal it back from my mate who has it down in Weymouth. I'm missing it!!!

The return of Coldplay is obviously a biggie. I think theyre the only band in the last 10-15 years to get such exposure worldwide, sell records, and actually make decent music....BUT at the moment there is some criminally underrated stuff out - Your Code Name Is Milo have just turned out a stunning second album, and Hot Hot Heat's Elevator went in at 34, despite being a better effort than some very, very hyped albums from the likes of Bloc Party and the Kaisers. If anyone hasnt yet heard 'Funeral' by The Arcade Fire btw, which has been out about a year on import, get it. Its stunning!

d-up. OK, so Britpop was good stuff, but other than that, any decade that proclaims rock dead and wearing T-Shirt and jeans as uncool was asking for a hasty demise. Then from about 1997 onwards I felt the '90s, having bled itself dry of any tangible culture, started clutching at straws and embraced 'retro' as a kind of substitute culture that could never last.
Right now, what has always been cool is cool, music sounds timeless again, and popular culture isn't dragging its heels and wearing out its parents wardrobe. About time too

It was crap.
It went dormant, thanks largely to grunge. Kurt Cobain provided the gore and yes, with the exception of the Stone Temple Pilots and a few Madchester rock/dance crossovers like the Inspirals, the 'Roses and Ride, it were fookin' shoite.
But now the new bands are digging out the pre-grunge stuff. Rock isn't slashing it's wrists any more - it's brilliant!

Nah, IMO the modern equivalen of punk is hip-hop. Think about it - it's angry, it's nasty, it scares the old guard and it's continually linked (fraudulently) to violence and crime.
Punk was short lived. 'proper' hip-hop (I'm thinking Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Sugar Hill Gang et al) was also short-lived, unfortunately this dreadful 'Gangsta rap' stuff has led to a very long, painful, cringe-worthy, protracted death.
All we need now is a hilarious gangsta rap equivalent of Spinal Tap and it'll be dead in the water.
