Following on from the 'Abandoned Theme Park' thread here featuring said theme park and some abandoned mental institution, I thought to myself I'm glad I don't live near those places because it'd scare the pants off me.
Silly me, I then realised I live right opposite and abandoned mental institution...!
Really, I have lived around here so long you don't realise it's there. It's a huge 100+ acre site full of busted up Victorian buildings set back from the access road (closed off). The place was closed down about 12-15 years ago now after housing some hardcore nutters. It's boarded up and fenced off with security and hazard warnings. They keep harping on about flattening it and developing it into houses. Anyways, on my way back from work today, I slung my bike over the fence and rode through the grounds as it's a good shortcut to my house. I took a bunch of pics on my phone that are shown below. Glad I rode back in the sunshine, when it was, to be fair, extremely pleasant. At night time, however, I expect it is very different. Bear in mind I am half out in the sticks so it's very quiet out here

I went up there a couple of years ago and the gates to the fenced off area were wide open. I wandered around inside the grounds and took loads of photo's, including some moody B&W ones which look great. Not got any online otherwise I would post.
It's certainly a spooky place and much bigger than it looks at first. Great to see it being explored on the web. When they evetually demolish it, it's gonna be a shame as it will be replaced by crappy modern wood frame houses, no doubt!

Some nice buildings there with potential for conversion. PH Development Co anyone? There was a place like that in Devizes which was the Wiltshire County Lunatic Asylum. At one time it housed 1500 luntics 
Some very nice housing was created through conversion of the old buildings in the late 90's. We bought the superintendents house in the grounds and are still restoring it 5 years later, so perhaps we are continuing the trend of the place housing lunatics!

Bet there are some chilling things left behind in that place.
I must admit I can't stand Victorian architecture - everything about it is oppressive and gloomy. That place screams images of blokes with mutton-chop sideburns and horn-rimmed glasses in an enormous top hat beating small children with a big stick for fun. It took until the 1920s for architects to let their hair down.

People used to escape from there sometimes, that's for sure, in fact some are probably living in the Haighton Green underground as we speak...!
They used to have a massive air-raid siren for the fire alarm. I always though it was the loony escaped alarm when I was a kid
They tested it once a week and I can remember it now, it was a mutha of a siren. Took about 15 seconds to wind up to full bore and a further 30 to spool down...! 
Imagine this but an order of magnitude meatier

That's like the one Robbie Coltrane played with on his program about V8's. I think the one he tried hadn't been used for years and never on petrol (used a gas I think) but they got it started and was very loud. They were used for Nuclear alerts in the 50's.

Can't understand the appeal of living in a converted mental asylum - buildings tend to 'absorb' their histories.
One of the reasons why I wouldn't want to live in a converted dark, satanic mill - I mean, how would you feel knowing that your bedroom was once a haven of automated misery where toddlers got their limbs ripped off trying to retrieve bits of cotton from underneath.
The Victorian era really was a gruesome catalogue of hardship for most people, and just about everything from the era reeks of it IMO.
