Who should I vote for???
Discussion
Hi All,
I know this must be about the 10,000 thread on this whole election nonsense most of which I've read, but... serious question.
I do not agree with all of the policies of any of the major parties, I like the liberal lets not talk bollox approach, but I can tell myself and most of the people I know would end up paying a lot more tax, which I'm not convinced would get spent in a worthwhile way.
To be totally controversial on here, I actually think Blair is the best leader, I think he went into Iraq believing he was doing the right thing, I don't have a problem with what he's done or why because I think Sadam needed getting rid of - we just should have done it about 10 years earlier! but again I don't really like the way the country is being run, speed cameras and pointless bureaucracy seem to be multiplying by the minute.
And I agree with quite a few of the conservative policies but can't bring myself to vote for Michael Howard, I don't think he's the right person for the job and again they have some shocking polices.
So what do I do... not vote at all as I don't actually want any of them to be running the country and think there needs to be a new "Common Sense" party set up. I also think there should be a box on the form that says none of these tossers.
remember chaps and chapesses, sensible comments that might help...
also is there any party that is promissing a better policy towards the car owner and the stupid way speeding is being inforced?

I remember clearly how awful the Boom/Bust cycles of the previous Conservative Governments were....roller-coaster inflation and interest rates, house repossessions etc....
Regardless, there has been over 8 yrs of relative economic stability under Labour.
I might vote for them based on this fact alone, and a fear that the Tories would/could cock it up again.

I'm not sure how much the Government is responsible for the state of the economy at the moment - it is mainly a reflection of the World's state and most economies tend to appreciate a stable non-interventional approach by Local Governments. The only good thing for the economy Labour has implemented was removing Government control of interest rates - selling the gold reserves at a vastly reduced rate can never be good "economics" nor the increase in red tape caused by the adoption of the european socialist controls. I believe the economy would have fared better had it not been for the grasping hands of the Exchequer.

You may very well be right.
All I would be voting for would be not "rocking the boat".
Sad that there is so little to be excited about wth any of the major parties.

why is it everyone forgets that this was something they inherited from the Tories.
the key thing here is that 8 years on the labour party have not totally screwed up the economy - something that they inherited from the tories was a robust economy - however, they are trying to break the country, and trying very hard.
labour have no concept of value for money. They never have, certainly dont now, and never will.
you only need to look at the increasingly complex tax structure we are developing to see that things are not well. you only need to see that increasing employers NI contribution 2 years ago was a cynical ploy at increasing general taxation without taxing the populous and not losing a vote. you only need to see that year after when Gordon Brown doesn't increase the various tax allowances by at least the rate of inflation - the tax take is getting bigger and bigger.
something has to give.

Ultimately- what some people have forgotten-you are voting for parties and their underlying philosophies are not their leaders.
Wasn't that my comment to you yesterday?
I have never maintained that we should vote on the basis of the leaders.
For the record I think Tony Blair is the most impressive of the Labour politicians (which is not saying much)
and that Micheal Howard isn't a great politician.

i kinda disagree. i dont think Blur is a good politician - i dont know why people trust so much - but he is an appalling public speaker and debater.
howard in my opinion is a very good speaker and debater.
he had emily mateless* on the ropes the other day when she accused him of "reducing Police numbers when he was homesec". check. but out came the reply "i reduced Police numbers because crime had fallen 18%" - checkmate. She kinda lost heart at that point.

The facts say otherwise, Tinman. Blair is a consummate professional, and a first class debater, but a politician to change society for the better, he is not. He is convinced he is doing good. That is the frustration.
i dont actually think hes the "charmer" thats made out. i personally think hes slimey and squeaks too much.
i think he has been the No1 beneficiary of the previous Tory govt. if labour were run by a chimp, it'd be just as popular as Blur.
As you know - everyone wanted rid of the last Tory govt and would of voted for anything. At the last election the "Tory Demon" was brought out to play - and people voted Labour again. They are desperate to bring out the "Tory Demon" this time but people are a little more fickle this time (possibly).
I dont think people are voting Labour because Blur is a "good" guy. They originally voted to get rid of a hamstrung Tory govt, they continued with a Labour Govt because "things aren't that bad at the moment" and historically - when things are good the Govt stays in power.
Ding ding round three today.
thanks for the advise guys...
like the idea of joining the party I think is best then trying to change it... much more like the idea of starting a new party called "Common Sense" though.
few policies would be...
- Get rid of all middle management in the public sector that are a waste of space, and simplify Tax and benefits etc.
- sensible approach to road safety
- all money earned from motorists to be used on transport, not just roads but also public transport.
- sensible immigtration policy, if they are genuine then yes, if not out... and out straight away.
- less busy bodying from centeral government let hospitals and the police get on with what they do best, just give them guidlines and more money because you won't have so many people employeed by government looking at useless reports.
somthing like that anyway!

Those are Conservative policies!
yep ok... so I'm a right wing fascist like everyone else on here, just have one question, what is the tory stand point on europe, from my point of veiw from the finance and business point of view, if we were in the Euro it would make life a lot easier and more profitable for us in the UK.
I guess I think we should be in europe and leading europe, what is the tory line and do we believe it?
