I was in Kensington this morning for a meeting with someone. After the meeting I was walking down Kensington High Street and saw quite a few kids with their collars up and their hats down – so all you could see was two eyes and a nose. Clearly they were up to something and didn’t want to be recognised by the CCTV. I then got on the tube and opposite me was this guy, in his mid twenties I guess, picking his nose and wiping the contents thereof on the seat next to him. When I got to Waterloo Station some beggar (in new trainers) asked me for some spare change and I shook my head. He then called me an AR$H()LE. All this on the day that Labour got back in. Boy has this country got problems.

Probably not, most of the youfs round my neck of the woods dress like that.

Ahh, my favourite pass time on the tube is pointing out peoples disgusting habits by shouting accross the carriage "DO YOU WANT A TISSUE FOR YOUR NASAL DEBRIS?" They seem to stop quite quickly for some reason

Don't worry about it, one had some guy with the seat of his trousers missing start spitting at me when I offered him a blanket which I had on the back seat of my car. Maybe he liked the ventillation??

One of many reasons why I moved out of London. I refuse to share the same air as these scum. They permeate even the nicest areas.

And what did you do about these anti-social episodes?

It is the rest of us standing back and doing nothing that lets it happen. Society is never going to be policed purely by those in the force, it needs honest, decent people to all do their bit to establish an atmosphere where people understand when they are doing wrong.

It is not the only thing society needs, but it is definitely a part of it.

Don't blame me for the country's problems. If I attempted to tackle the youths in the street I'd probably get a knife in the neck. If I confronted the snotty nosed git on the train I'd get some flicked my way. If I'd have hammered my point home to the rich beggar I'd simply have received more abuse.

Society's problems are far deeper than "having a go back". These issues stem from the family unit being almost a thing of the past. Young boys not having fathers who are role models. A Government which gives benefits to those who aren't interested in working. Criminal sentencing being woefully inadequate. An education system which is rejected by the underclass. Freely available drugs. etc....

A bit dramatic and Daily Mail don't you think? I have had a knife pulled on my but even i can accept the fact it's rare, not worth living your life being afraid IMHO. Why did you need to 'tackle' the youths just because they had theirs collars up and heads down anyway, do you also try and tackle muslim women wearing the traditional head wear aswell!?

I had to stand up on the busy tube a while ago and a casually dressed unshaven bloke tried picking my pocket, I looked straight at him and said very loudly "CAN YO REMOVE YOUR HAND FROM MY POCKET BEFORE I DO IT FOR YOU"

Many people stared and he swiftly made off along the train!

A bit pedantic and Guardian don't you think?. So, you had a knife pulled on you once, what's your point?, was it in a back street with 4 hooded bruvva's or street trash looking to score some gear, mate, or just another tt with a penknife who was hoping you had less courage than his abundance of stupidity. Rare is a relative term. For some people the threat of being knifed is an everyday reality that is too common for comfort, the fear is real and reinforced by the reality of hooded untouchable formless street gangsta's who hide behind the banner of all manner of Home Office approved disadvantaged client groups. Perhaps when you’re not a freewheeling, nothing-to-lose-student, and feel that there is more to life than just trying to be sit on the wall being Mr Nice Guy to all, you’ll recognise and understand the underlying point(s) of srebbe64 post…

I've found a way around getting bothered by people in the street. It involves being a right heartless b'stard but it works.

-Buy one copy of the Big Issue once and keep it on you. Make sure the front cover is noticeable to anyone selling the Big Issue.

-As for any of the botherers with charity boxes, you can tell them one of two things. One, that you actually write for the magazine they're trying to flog you. Two, that you've already got a standing order with them (in fact, to salve my conscience, I set up a standing order with Save the Children so at least I'm partially telling the truth).

-10-20p in 1p coins looks like a lot of money when you drop it into a beggar's bowl whilst walking. Of course, if they're genuine, why not give a little generously? But if they're abusive, ungrateful or faking it, a handful of coins shuts them up instantly. And you'll be clean away by the time they realise you've offloaded your useless small change that wouldn't get them a look at the drugs or drink they're after.

-Use your PH instinct to take racing lines through city centres and crowds. Dodging deftly round chavvish hordes is more satisfying than having to put up with the sight of them.

As for the guy on the tube picking his nose, well he's just disgusting.

Absolutely not, most of nearby Europe remains largely civilised - when a Brit team aren't playing away nearby. The cleanliness and calm in most central German or French cities is always a pleasant shock to the system. Public transport reliable and clean, town centres largely free of litter and graffiti, passers-by generally polite, youf culture not totally absent maybe but I'll be damned if I can see it...and I get around a bit.

Edited to add - still thinking on this, the far east's a real mish-mash from Singapore (wow) to Thailand's own crowded mix of ancient and modern...the really poor countries out there don't make for a direct comparison (e.g. Laos), middle east - well only Qatar and Oman to compare but definitely no problems there, apart from the guys driving along in Q with a large machine gun in the back of their pick-up, but no yobs in sight (no wonder!), eastern europe may have declined a bit...won't offer an opinion as it's years since I was behind what was the iron curtain.

Have to say, it does depress me when I fly back from just about anywhere, knowing that there's our wonderful chav culture waiting beyond check-in. No sign of any meaningful remedy with BLiar telling the police to fight social injustice - 'criminals are victims' remember. Jeez. How about we get that Pistonheads Retirement Island bought and sorted?

Our next door but 8 house got a petrol bomb through the letterbox 2 weeks ago.

And on Friday just, a man bit the ear off a youth who he found in his back garden.

And I live in the 'nicer' part of town.

Britain, its just not fun anymore.

My Brother had an interesting confrontation the other day.

He was driving along a typical surburban London street and the local yoof deliberately stepped in front of his van. He slowed down but still hit one or two of them at 5-10 mph. They swarmed around his van, he got out with his crock lock in his hand and they ran.

Just another day in London.
