if you are accessing your office network via a VPN then you should ask for the highest bandwith you can get otherwise you will find the 'interaction' speed can be quite slow it will also help for pdf type files and listening to the radio online. There are 1mb and 2mb residential versions availble now - be wary of the many special offers that are not really 'special'. If you are not choosy about supplier - try Tiscali.

If you can run terminal services over the VPN you should have a much better emailing experience.
I have found Notes to be a bit better than Outlook over VPN. Working on the server inbox or a periodically replicated inbox is pretty straightforward over a 1M line.

If you need to access work through it then I'd speak to your works IT before finalising anything, they may have some unusual requirements like a fixed IP or something. Thankfully Notes is nothing like *spit* Exchange, and is much better at working over slow links, it doesn't tend to do all the pausing for no apparent reason that Outlook on Exchange does. Again, I'm sure your works IT will be able to set your Notes up for you and advise what's appropriate for whatever you'l be using it for. Remember though, after you've opened that 5 Meg document you'l want to save it again at some point and then the upload speed comes into play and most of the time when you go to one or two meg download the upload speed stays at 256. All else being equal, I'd start at 512 for fifteen sheets and if you decide you need more, its usually only a quick phone call to upgrade the speed later anyway.

With a Telewest line you're stuck with Telewest broadband only? However I'm a Telewest telephone customer and if you're saying their broadband service is good that helps me.
I use Freedom2Surf (www.f2s.co.uk) 2Mb download for £25/month. Absolutely fabulous performance and great service. They work via BT lines do you don't have to change enything else. There is a 50Gb/month limit, but you're unlikely to come close to that. They do slower as well, but since when did the word slower go down well on PistonHeads?
I've found with a lot of people (I could be wrong and those people just unforunate), but cable broadband services are very restrictive and very unreliable.
I'd highly recommend Plus.net. £21.99 for up to an 8Mb line (depends on the distance from your main exchange).
It's highly reliable and the customer service is fantastic. 24/7.

The moment you give up BT wire is the moment you join a monopoly.
DSL over BT wire is without doubt the way forward. Telewest and NTL are mere pretenders.

Oh well, I ditched Telewest TV for Sky because I like the sports channels and Telewest are more expensive with Sky sports and/or movies.
Could be that I'll ditch their phone too for a better choice in broadband.
I'll be helping my parents out with a PC purchase and broadband at some point. They're on a BT line so this thread will prove useful.
