Well I was getting bored and thinking what I could do with my time.
Driving along I spotted a sheet of corregated iron in a skip. Having snaffled it before I knew what to do with it I decided to build a barbecue.
Routed a frame around the corregated. Built a couple of little tables either side. Couldn't find an oildrum anywhere so here is the deathwish bit!!
I had an old gas bottle.
Got all dregs of gas out of it with the valve.
Spannered the valve fitting off....(hairy moment!!!!! )
Left it empty outside for a week to let any remaining gas evaporate.
Filled it with water for two days to displace any liquid gas.
Emptied out and filled with sand ready for the cutting.
Using angle grinder cut top and bottom off and sliced the thing in two.
Makes a great 2 bowl barbecue!!!

You could have at least used a big gas bottle, it took me a while to spot it!

Might be an idea to remove the petrol can underneath before you fire it up for the first time.

Deathwish DIY? Doesn't sound like it from the precautions you took. Sounds more like namby-pamby-play-it-safe DIY to me.

Deathwish DIY would have involved knocking the valve off with a club hammer and then firing up the angle grinder.

To stop it exploding if there was any vapour residue. Pretty sensible precaution I'd say, but why take the risk in the first place?

I saw someone cutting a gas bottle with an acetylene cutter a few weeks back, on a barge in a boatyard. I didn't hang around to see what the outcome would be!

The galvanised sheet is to protect the fence behind from heat and sparks.
The original plan was to have three bowls in a row, then, depending how many people I was cooking for I could light one, two or all three bowls.
Anyhow, got some grills made to measure by a local blacksmiths and it works a treat.

Nice one my old man made one of those chiminera*spelling?* thingys out of an old gas bottle, watch out for the fumes from the galv the first time you light it though. Zinc's heavy metal not good for you and all the rest of the health and safety nonsense.

It's a barbecue- it'll get you one way or the other!
