I have a fairly standard 3-bed house built in 1988 and it has a bog-average gas boiler (Ideal Elan) with hot water tank in the airing cupboard and cold water tank and CH expansion tank in the roof.
The whole thing is starting to creak and groan - probably furred up to buggery, and the boiler's never been serviced. Eventually it will go bang and it seems sensible to replace the whole caboodle with a modern condensing boiler and pressurised system, so there are no tanks anywhere.
Can anyone say how much it might cost? Ta!

Please be careful specifying a Combi if you expect to fill a bath in the same sort of time as a cylinder would.
If you go 'unvented hot water' then again make damn sure you have not just decent pressure, but also flow.
Go Condensing...if you don't you must get an exemption certificate from the installer. 'Benchmark' means that everything is traceable now.......Big Brother Corgi is watching you.

We have some form of condensing boiler and it is crap, I would NEVER EVER get rid of a hot water tank , cold water tank and traditional boiler.
The joy of our combi boiler is that in the 8 months we have lived in the house the gas board have been out to it on 4 occasions, and the amount of rattling would seem to indicate the 5th visit will be soon! This is inspite of the workings of the oiler being replaced under warranty 4 months before we moved in (not that we knew it)!
Turn on any tap in house and the hot water suddenly becomes a trickle. Showering becaomes a challenge as you can guarante that if you have a shower when the other half is up she will flush the polet, put on the washing machine, dishwasher etc all guaranteed to reduce the shower to a trickle.
In the event of a power cut one has no hot water at all, oh and if the water is turned off at all the only water you have is in the toilet cistern!
