I gave mine in on a wednesday , and got it back on a saaturday.
This is NOT gauranteed by the way , there are some offices that will guarantee for about £45 , or same day about £85. Details are with the application forms.

Steve, the nearest office is Durham, Liverpool is bigger but tends to be busier. Phone up and make an appointment, take all your documentation with you and then wait for about 4 to 6 hours. When I went they decided not to issue mine on the spot; they wanted to telephone one of my witnesses who was at work at the time. Anyway, all sorted by the start of the next day, they sent it by registered post so I had the next morning.

Have you lost your old one or has it just expired? If you have lost it be prepared for a lot of begging and hassle.
The one week guaranteed service is one week from when you get your appointment. You can't just turn up anymore. I was offered an appointment in London two weeks after I phoned. Managed to get an appointment in Peterborough next day.
Still missed all of Eurohoon because of it though.

In reality though, some of the smaller offices can give you an appointment quickly, I phoned Durham on Monday morning, was seen on Tuesday afternoon, had my passport on Thursday morning. However, your point is valid, particularly as it is getting towards the busiest time of year, I went in February.

IIRC last year I called them with about a week to go, but didn't trust the post so called in to collect it in person. Honestly can't remember if I had the forms already filled out, think so.. Their website is pretty good for telling you whats needed..

Assuming you still have a passport now:
Get a budget airline to somewhere hot and with a beach.
Throw passport into the sea as soon as you get there.
Go to British Embassy saying you are on holiday and have lost your passport.
Kick back for three days enjoying the sun.
Go back to British Embassy to pick up emergency passport.
Fly back home.

Last time I needed a new passport, I had to get a permit to go airside at Heathrow, hence the passport!
Went to the South Wales one (closest from Somerset) queued up, presented form + info, paid cash, provided fax from customer saying when and why it was needed, went for a pint, came back and it was done. Went home.

If nothing else you need to have someone witness either your application or your mugshots, can't quite remember which one and when. I needed to do both, due to a lost (misplaced

Actually, I think WH may have mentioned that only a total bafoon would have got ready to go without checking, so that gave me the hint that I ought to have checked.. At least this year I've got that sorted. Just need to organise a car now..

I had lost mine and and went to the Durham office with all paper work, and they would not issue until all checks carried out again. It took a week but even then that was not certain and they kept saying it could take up to 2 weeks. There is a facility for you to call and they will advise where the application is up to.
If it is a renewal, no problem at all getting it the same day.
