Long shot... wood-effect veneer sheets

Hi,

Does anyone know where you can purchase sheets of wood-effect (i.e. plastic etc!) veneer sheets? I checked out Formica.co.uk and they sent me samples but they were real wood - I neither want nor need to go to that expense though.

I have a desk that I am perfectly happy with but it is made of (probably) chip-board covered in a Cherry style laminate.

I want to put up some shelves and, because of the depth of shelf required, I wondered whether I could just buy the chipboard, make them and then cover them in matching veneer.

Or is there a better way to do it?

Erm, buy the chipboard ready-veneered.

It's not common to buy veneer seperate from the underlying wood, in my experience. If you buy it ready-veneered, you can stain it to whatever colour you like as well (but be very careful when rubbing it down.)

Interesting - I assumed that you couldn't buy ready-veneered stuff in big enough sheets (based on nothing more than ignorance!!)... but thinking about it, that's all kitchen cabinets etc would be isn't it!

OK - next question ... does anyone know where I can purchase ready-veneered chipboard-sheets? Oh, and matching edging strips.

Veneered MDF is available at any good DIY place.

To buy Veneer on its own, speak to a local cabinet maker and enquire where they buy it or if they can cut you a veneer off an existing bit of wood.

Any dDIY shop will have them I think "conti-board" is the brand name

A builders merchant Jewsons etc will be much cheaper

Personally I'd use real wood, it's not that much more expensive (if you get it from the right place)

Why don't you just use proper wood? Get yourself to the local woodyard and buy a length of hardwood.

Where are you? Im a timber merchant & I might be able to help or point you in the right direction.

Veneered MF is probably the easiest & cheapest option, but you can also get paper backed flexible veneer.

The reason I hadn't in the first place is I assumed (I know, I know "to assume makes an ass of u and me" ) that it would be not just more expensive but prohibitive to use real wood. Now that may not be the case I'll probably give it a go.

Yeah - there is a place near Croydon who do just this.

We're after some 7ftx2ft sheets and they're more than happy to help out ... and they are very friendly and extremely responsive.

I've got the details at home so I'll post them here tonight for you.

You can buy it on a roll in Homebase/B&Q/Focus.. its Fablon from memory... just peel off the backing and stick it on (having meticulously cleaned first) to your surface to be covered. I did some kitchen cupboards with some a while back and was quietly impressed.

Fablon is the stuff. I have a friend who, to the amazement of all, recovered his £4000 speakers in the stuff.
I defy you to tell the differance.....

My "desk" is a door (unfinished with no hole drilled in it) on top of two file cabinets at each end. To match the nice wood of the file cabinets, I got a sheet of plastic "formica" or laminate (not contact paper, but much heavier) to cover the top, and a roll of skinny stuff to go around the edges. I got both of these things (the big sheet and the narrow roll) at Home Depot, so any DIY store might have it. It would likely be near kitchen and bath stuff, because people would use it to re-cover formica cabinets, counters, counter edges. Anyway, you can get a sheet longer and wider than a door, I think it comes in huge rolls and they cut it off for you. You have to use special adhesive. Also, it doesn't flex around corners or sharp curves well, so you'll have to cut it carefully.
