Messerschmitt 109 back in the air
Discussion
For those interested in such things, I've discovered some video footage on the web of an early test flight of a newly restored Messerschmitt Bf-109E "Emil". What's interesting about thios is that the "E" model of the 109 was the version used by the Luftwaffe at the beginning of WW2 (1939-41) and is the type faced by the RAF during the Battle of Britain.

I'm pretty sure that there's someone in America that builds P51 Mustang replicas for the pylon racing fraternity. There's certainly a 2/3rd scale version available (in carbon fibre IIRC) I think there's also a UK company that will build Spitfires to customer specs. Not sure if they'd be based on 100% new componants.

Anyone interested in vintage aircraft and at a loose end tomorrow, might like to pay a visit to Hullavington for the 'GREAT VINTAGE FLYING WEEKEND' www.zolid.com/cirrus/index.htm and here www.hullavington.info/diary/diary_home.html
I live near Hullavington, and all day the glorious sound of big aero engines has been reverberating around the village
Pity the weather's been crap, but there's always tomorrow.

There are a number of "new build" WW2 fighter projects in progress at the moment. A Focke Wulf Fw-190 flew in Germany last year. Four Messerschmitt Me-262s are being built in the US and one of them has already flowm. There are LOADS of restorations flying, some of which are pretty much new build.
The "109" involved in the tragic accident was actually the Old Flying Machine Company's Hispano Buchon (a 109 fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin). It appeared at the 2000 Goodwood Revival and then crashed a few weeks later, killing the pilot, Mark Hanna.
The Duxford 109 which crashed was an authentic German built 109G which flipped over on landing. It has been fully restored but will not fly again. It is on display at the RAF Museum, Hendon.

Why doesn't someone start up a company building WW2 aircraft replicas but with modern avionics obviously ? Or maybe there is.
I think Hawker Restorations in Suffolk will do as much as your wallet allows
Did you know the main spar of a Hurricane is a dodecahedral section with a round section friction-fitted inside? Easy to make in 1940 but try it now!

Here is the site of the chaps who do the modern FW190:

BTW is itn't time for a all-airplane forum? Ted?
Not "quite" the same subject, but, does anyone know what happened to that Lancaster that was owned by 2 farming type brothers in either Lincolnshire or maybe South Yorkshire?
I've seen it on TV and the plane looks quite good but they don't have the funds. All they could do was give it a run down the old runway (on their own land) every now and then. Seeing as they are so rare, it seems a real shame.

The Lancaster is at East Kirkby, a former American base near Spilsby in Lincolnshire. There is a good little air museum (only the one aeroplane) and the whole thing is a 'labour of love' in memory of an elder brother who died in WW2. The Lancaster is pretty good - it can taxi under its own power, but is probably unlikely to fly again for economic reasons - 4 new merlins don't come cheap....
There was a whole history of this Lanc in Flypast a few months ago. She is kept in ground running order and has been used for a number of TV documentaries and dramas for taxying and interior shots. There are no ambitions to get her airworthy but it is great that she is still a "live" aeroplane.
There is a virtual new build Mosquito project underway in Australia and also a restoration of a Beaufighter to airworthiness.
