I have been looking on Ebay and prices are all over the place.
Am I right in thinking, as long as the tog rate is the same, I can't go far wrong with a cheaper one?

The cheaper ones tend to use inferior quality feathers. Get the most expensive you can afford.

I agree.. you get what you pay for really. No need to go silly on expensive ones but 200-300£ for a kingsize is adequate. The great thing is that they are very light and toasy so you dont have to be strangled under a heavy non breathing cheapo cotton filled duvet

A bit late to the thread but here goes:
Down duvets are great. The high heat insulation per gramme properties of down mean that you will be getting a lighter duvet for the tog rating.
A general rule of thumb is that the colder the climate that the donor animal is from, the lighter the duvet for the rating. A consistent winner in blind tests is hungarian goose down.
You can also get mixtures of feathers & down which will be cheaper.
Unless it's a cheap duvet you don't need to worry about getting pricked by the feathers. Decent duvets have a 2 layer cotton percale (very tight weave) covering to stop percolaction (feathers poking through). If a duvet or pillow does percolate excessively, take it back as the fabric is likely to be faulty.
It has been a few years since I worked in the industry but IIRC The leading player in the general market for down duvets is Fogarty. I believe they supply M&S, John Lewis etc with many of their ranges. They also sell under their own name but this does not necessarily make it any better or cheaper than the high street shops.
