A chat client, like msn messenger or icq. IRC chat is Internet Relay Chat.

Exactly, I only use it because it’s annoying having multiple windows for different Instant Messaging programs and this is an all in one solution.

IRC is the daddy of internet chat rooms, and is still the home of large hordes of net geeks. The channels often have little or no rules and conversation can become extremly not safe for work, not safe for anyone, and is normally extremly politically incorrect and offencive. This is why most people really like it...
