Have you considered either switching to a flat rate scheme (which would save most of the work) or using an accountant.

I don't need to. It only takes about 4 hours for me to do them, and I only claim VAT back, I don't give the barstewards any. But I STILL hate it!!

My accountant gave me a copy of Clearly Bookeeping - mostly a good piece of software and VAT return is a one-click exercise. Would reccomend it.

I use Money Manager, whic is also pretty easy to use.

The best package I have encountered, from the perspective of auditing/preparing accounts from the clients records, is Sage.

Though this is too expensive and complicated for many small businesses.

No, HM Customs and REVENUE now.

HM C&E and the Inland Revenue are now merged.

I have an Excel spreadsheet provided by my accountant. I just enter invoices and expenses and it calculates the VAT return for me.

It'd be better if you put the net payment of nil in, and it calculated the invoices required
